Adam Shortt was a Prussian soldier originally spelling the name "Kurtz"
Kurtz was an apprenticed weaver in his own country and disliking both master and trade, he ran away to Hanover where he was recruited for soldiering under George III.
After peace was declared, he elected to stay in the new world settling on 300 acres on the High Shore, Sophiasburgh. He changed his name to "Shortt" by translating it in order to get along with his British and American neighbors.
"Shortt" served with the British but left them and made his way through the American lines to New Jersey. He lived there 15 years, working as a weaver.
He left New Jersey about 1800 with his wife, nee Odell, and four children, settling at Green Point on the Bay of Quinte, in Sophiasburgh.
He lived here many years, worked as a weaver until shortly before the death of his 2nd wife. At the time of his death, he was in possession of over 600 acres of land and prosperous.

Adam Shortt, of Green Point, Sophiasburgh Tp., Prince Edward Co., U.C., d. 1854, reportedly aged over 94 years. According to Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, "The pioneer of the Shortt family - Adam Shortt - was of German birth and extraction. He was born in Strasburg in 1760.... After serving [as an apprentice] three years, weaving cotton, linen and wool, he became a full-fledged journeyman, qualified to earn his living, which he did, travelling from place to place as the exigencies of his vocation demanded. While still a young man he left Germany for America, and arrived, after an eighteen weeks' passage, at New York. This was during the progress of the Revolutionary War, in which he served for some time with the British.... He is next discovered in New Jersey, occupied as a weaver.... There he lived and wove for fifteen years, and acquired a reputation for industry and integrity.... Being in sympathy with a British connection for the colonies ... he left New Jersey about the year 1800, and with his wife ... and four children, came to Prince Edward County. He settled on the shore of the Bay of Quinte, at Green Point, Sophiasburgh. There he built a log house ... situated right at the water's edge.... During the Pioneer's long residence at Green Point his prosperity grew apace; from time to time he bought land, until at his death he had purchased and improved about six hundred acres, which then passed to his sons.... He ... lived to be an extremely old man, having seen his ninety-fourth birthday before the end came. He died in 1854."[38] According to the same source, Adam Shortt m. (2) "a twice widowed woman, n

HEAD MASTER'S NOTES

Summet' Term, 1928.-The Summer Term will commence on Thursday, 3rd May, and end on Wednesday, 25th July, 1928.

...I was equally deligDted to be pleasantly surprised, one morning, by the arrival of a most handseme solid silver Challe':lge Cup from the brothers F. ]., F. G., and E. Ryeland-Capt. Ryeland's three sons, whose' careers at School we remember with the greatest pleasure. They were, as might have been expected, particularly interested in and devoted to the Royal Engirieers School Cadet Company, with whose progress and success they were closely connected as responsible non-commissioned officers. For such service we were much indebted to them, and now they have increased that debt to an extent and :in a manner difficult to repay. Their gift has been handed on to the School Cadet Company as a Cup for Shooting. The Rio Tinto Mining Company of Huelva, Spain, have secured the :services of the eldest brother, Francis John, to whom I have :bad the pleasure of writing, recently, a congratulatory message upon his marriage. I know he will be glad to hear from other .contemporaries at his address: Vista Alegre I, Minas de Rio Tinto, Huelva, SPain.

1st CADET COY. C.P.(F.) R.E.

Mention must also be made of three other ex-cadets in connection with the Ryeland Shooting Cup, a most handsome silver trophy which the. three brothers Ryeland, C.Q.M.S. F. J. Ryeland, Serjt. F. G. Ryeland and Serjt. E. Ryeland, have presented to the Corps for an inter-section musketry competition. The Corps is extremely grateful for this generous gift, and has done its best to show its gratitude by commencing to compete' a:t once for the Cqp. The scheme of the competition is as follows :-Each of the. sections will fire on its allotted day throughout the year, at the end of which each will hand in its six best individual targets, the trophy being awarded to the section with the highest aggregate. This competition has, indeed~ aroused such enthusiasm that ~e problem now is to pay for the ammunition used by our zealous, aspiring marksmen.

In memory of the late Edward Ryeland there will be presented annually an "Edwaid Ryeland Memorial Prize," the gift of his brother, Frederick G. Ryeland, who is himself also one of our Old Boys, and to whom we offer on behalf of the School our sincere thanks. The conditions under which the prize will be awarded will be announced later. It is a tribute to the sterling character, of one whose good qualities endeared him to all who knew him.

We deeply regret to announce the following deaths

29th December.-Edward Ryeland (1918-26), Lient. in the Cinque Ports (Fortress) Royal Engineers.

Many will have heard with regret of the sudden death in December last of Edward Ryeland. A lasting reminder of his. loyalty to the Corps and all that it means is shown by the gift of a 0.22 Vickers rifle, with the inscription "Presented to the Dover County School in Proud Memory of Lieut. Edward Ryeland, C.P. (F.) R.E., a Former Scholar and a Member of the School Cadet Corps, who Passed Away 29th December,. 1932, Aged 22 Years."

5688 Norman's Mom ran a small grocery store in Philadelphia through the depression. There, Norman began to learn the produce business. After graduating from a School of Agriculture in the Philadelphia area , he eventually went to Israel in 1949 to help the country develop. He began to question what he was doing one night when he was on guard duty for the kibbutz carrying a gun. He was also disturbed by reports of what was going on in the US with regard to McCarthyism. He decided to return to the US.On the return journey (ship), he met Herb and Adina Wienstein who would eventually introduce him to his first wife.

He got a job inspecting produce in railway cars in Detroit and eventually married Ruth and they had their first child. Ruth was lonesome for her family in Montreal so they moved there and had 3 more children. Norman got a job with the Steinberg supermarket chain and worked there from 1957 to 1985 working his way up from a produce clerk to being Group Vice President of Miracle Food Mart for 12 years and Executive Vice President , Supermarkets for 1 1/2 years. He worked very long hours, always wanting to make an important contribution to the organization and to the employees in it.

In 1974, he was diagnosed with cancer and underwent chemical and radiation therapy. His doctor, the wonderful Dr Alison at Mount Sinai also recommended that he do some work to heal emotionally - suggesting gestalt or Reevaluation Counselling. Norman pursued both of these as well as transactional analysis, redecision therapy and University of Toronto graduate courses in Adult Education and Counselling Psychology. These studies changed him and his managment style. He became very concerned with helping employees get in touch with themselves so that they could bring their best creativity/thinking to the organization. He did one to one Reevaluation Counselling with employees who were interested in re-emerging from their emotional hurts.

He also assisted each of his children to find jobs and in some cases find themselves. Norman was very close to his Mom and his sister. He phoned every two weeks and the few vacations that he took were always to Philadelphia to be with them.

The note on his gravestone is " Thank you for your wisdom, guidance, and inspiration ".
