He was an eyewitness to world history; a globe-trotting pioneer who covered the tumult of the 1950s and 60s on TV, radio and in print; an executive who united a balkanized broadcaster; and a reassuring presence on the evening news: a Canadian Cronkite.

In the days since Knowlton Nash's death on May 24, at age 86 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease, generations of Canadians have paid tribute to his unflappable nature, his modesty, his devotion to objectivity, his selflessness, and his almost unparalleled stamina. On Wednesday afternoon, friends, family, former colleagues and members of the public gathered at Toronto's Grace Church On-The-Hill for a funeral service overflowing with memories. Inevitably, some stories went untold.

Like the one about Sesame Street.

In the early 1970s, after he'd stepped away from reporting to head up CBC's information programming, Mr. Nash's bailiwick included children's television. Sesame Street, a new import, was popular, but he saw room for improvement. "We wanted to insert our own segments

4328 Just who the patriarch of the Monteaths of Park of Jerah was is unclear and the first record so far unearthed is from the Dunblane Testaments: 15 Dec 1664 - Andrew Monteath of Park of Jerah & Geils Kinross.

Many Monteaths are in the Logie Parish residing over 100yrs after the above Andrew, some at Park of Jerah, & Little Jerah who could be descended from him or his sons, proof seems impossible but I have noted the possibilities[?], some could be correct but unless someone unearths private family documentation we shall always wonder. Coldhome which was later occupied by a descendant of Elizabeth & Alexanders had in 1691, John Monteath & his wife Janet Viccar farming there and by the naming laws this would be a brother of Alexanders. Sponsors for the baptisms of some of Alexander & Elizabeths children at Park of Jerah were John, William & Patrick Monteath plus Richard Henderson. Richard was the husband of Agnes Monteath and I have discovered in Perthshire in that era of sponsors they were mostly siblings or close relatives. Therefore I have placed all those people in Alexanders family, remembering that they may well be just cousins, but to easily keep track of detail of these I have entered them.

4332 Kathleen Florence Brownhill's birth was registered in 1882, (Birth Certificate No.10538 - registered at Goulburn, NSW). Her parents were given as James & Henrietta. By 1913 she had moved to Sydney and the following was recorded in the: 1913 Division of Parramatta - Gordon to Hornsby Electoral Roll:- 763 - BROWNHILL - Kathleen Florence Lane Cove Road, Roseville, Teacher. (This entry was below that of my Grandmother who was Ellen Brownhill, from Aston, Birmingham, England who married Arthur William Pearson the following year.) In 1919 - (Marriage Certificate No. 7473 - registered at Sydney) - Kate married Herbert Godwin (or Goodwin) MALLAM. Herbert was born in Armidale, NSW in 1870. He was a widower at that time with 2 sons - Walter born in 1905 and Gordon born in 1907. His wife Margaret (nee Ross) died in Armidale in 1910. Herbert & Margaret had been married there in 1902. Kate and Herb lived in Armidale for many years, but I can't find any further family for them. She died there on the 26 Nov, 1950. Kathleen F Mallam left a will. It was No. 371643 Possible Series 4? (This information from the Probate Index, which gives her date of death.) According to AGCI (Australasian Genealogical Computer Index) both Kate and Herb died the same day, but I think this is an error, and I couldn't find any will left by Herb, but I can check this out further on my next visit to Sydney. BROWNHILL, Kate Florence (I3365)

Article from 'Acton Inns and Pubs' by Dr T. Harpur 48 Perryn Rd. Acton (1989) :
The Horse and Groom
This tavern stood at the west end of East Acton Green next to the smithy. It first appears in the 1723 licence lists. There are eleven landlords to 1826.
A London advertisement for a farm sale sent enquirers to the Horse and Groom in 1743.
In the nineteenth century it was a stop on the parish perambulation. It is not surprising that when sponsors for licences were required in 1827, Richard Atlee the smith vouched for George KEMPE the licensee.
The Horse and Groom is seen in later illustrations to be a little country pub. Business would not have been brisk. Indeed Samuel Mills (1836-61) was also the local carpenter.
In 1889 the lease of both tavern and forge was assigned to Arthur Sich of Chiswick Brewery. The last landlord was Thomas Price, by 1907 the Horse and Groom had closed its doors and so too had the forge. The Goldsmiths' Company had bought them from Sich (1907) in return for land to rebuild the Goldsmiths Arms.
The Goldsmiths Arms
In 1880 the lease was renewed with Fullers who planned to rebuild the house. The sessions approved the plan in 1908 on condition that the Horse and Groom was demolished on completion in 1909.
