Steven CHAPMAN who married Margaret ELGAR is my 8xGreat Grandfather on my mothers side of the family. I am in the process of researching that side of the family at the moment and have only just come across the CHAPMAN's the other day, as I said, what a small world.

Steven and Margaret had 10 children in total, my line starts with their daughter Mary (b1644) who married Robert BAKER (b Abt 1642), they married in Folkestone Kent on the 11 June 1667. They had 13 children and the list goes on and on. If you are interested, once I have compiled my findings, I will send you a copy. Ok. Regards, John Lilley

Re ELGAR, - my maternal great-grandmother was Sarah ELGAR, born abt 1851, possibly at Tilmanstone, Kent? and died abt 1930. Sarah married Stephen FOAD, 23 December 1876 and they had 7 children one of whom Stephen Herbert FOAD was my maternal grandfather. Unfortunately I very little about Sarah's parents, not even their names, except that her father was supposed to have died when she was a child. Sarah's mother was b. circa 1809-10 at Tilmanstone Kent, d. 1914, 4 days after Stephen FOAD, Sarahs spouse, when she was 104! I know of no bro's or sis's. Does this tie up with any other data? Regards John Streeter, also researching FOAD and DEVESON.

In 1834 there was a John Hackett who was a farmer and a Thomas Hackett who was a brushmaker, and in 1836 there was a Thomas Polly who was a laborer, but there's no indication that they were related. They were all living in Troy. Robert and Mary Ann themselves were not in the city directory.

In the 1810 US Census there is a J Polley living in Troy, 5 members of the household, 2 white males under 10, 1 white female under 10, 1 white male aged 26-44, 1 white female aged 16-25. So J Polley is likely about 26 years old, his wife about 24 and three children under 10, this would fit with Robert being one of the three, likely the oldest. Robert's eldest son was named James Henry, could be after his father. - Source Citation Year: 1810; Census Place: Troy, Rensselaer, New York; Roll: 35; Page: 362; Image: 00037; Family History Library Film: 0181389

He married Deborah Way in 1815 in Brunswick, New York. Deborah's parents had settled in the Centre Brunswick area sometime in about 1785.

John and Deborah had about ten children were born to them while they farmed in Rensselaer County.

Brunswick is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, United States that was originally settled in the early 18th century. The source of the town's name is not certain, though some claim it comes from the source of its first inhabitants i.e. the province of Brunswick-L

Comments: Susannah Boxer & James Morford are amongst my wife's ancestors. For a long time I had stalled at her parentage, and I was aware of the debate you record about whether the daughter of Richard Boxer & Margaret Watson married either Thomas Spearpoint or James Morford. I now have what I think is the definitive answer. The will of Margaret Boxer, widow of Richard, dated 25 Apr 1773, names "My daughter Susan the wife of James Morfit of Folkstone, Baker". The will also names inter alia her son Watson Boxer, so I'm sure it's the correct family.

---------------------------------------------------------
I had earlier (and erroneously) changed this Susan Boxer to the wife of James Morford, rather than Thomas Spearpoint based on the following information from Leslie Huppert:

"Your GEDCOM reminded me that back in November we corresponded with Jan McMaster of Sydney, Australia. Jan is descended from Susan Boxer and Thomas SPEARPOINT. When we began comparing notes, though, there was some confusion and we've not yet heard back from Jan. She had Susan, born 1722 to Richard and Margaret Boxer, marrying Mr Spearpoint. Well, that Susan is MY Susan who married James MORFORD. At least, I'm fairly certain that's the case. I note that your data, like Jan's, has:
2 Susannah Boxer b. 2 Mar 1721/22 d. 21 Apr 1802 m. 30 Nov 1744 Thomas Spearpoint b. 4 Nov 1722 d. ABT. 1779
from SS Mary & Eanswythe Parish Register: Susan and Hannah twin daughters of Richard and Margaret Boxer. Allow me to present my argument (apologies to Sue and Dee, who've heard it before).

"James Morford, a baker, son of Peter and Mary, was baptised in Folkesone at the age of 7. Upon his 13 Jan 1745 marriage to Susan BOXER he became a Freeman of Folkestone. He and Susan had nine children, with the first born in 1745 and the last in 1763.

"The IGI shows a Susan BOXER marrying Thomas SPEARPOINT in 1744, their first child baptised in 1745 and their last in 1763 - so nine kids in twenty one years. Very similar data! I looked at the names of the children and found - MORFORD Susan, Margaret (for maternal grandmother?), Mary, Sarah, Thomas, Ann, Elizabeth, James and Hannah (for mother's twin sister?) SPEARPOINT Susan, Henry, Thomas, Baker, Ann, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary and James

"Interestingly, not a single son was named Richard, which might have clarified matters! The IGI lists only three Susan Boxers in Kent christened in the same timeframe (sort of) and they are: Susan d. James/Elizabeth 18 Mar 1709 Folkestone Susan d. RIchard/Margaret bp 1722 Susan d. Jacob/Mary bp 2 Jun 1731 Folkestone

If one assumes they were christened in infancy, then:
1744 1745 1763 Susan d. James age 35 age 36 age 54 Susan d. Richard age 22 age 23 age 41 Susan d. Jacob age 13 age 14 age 32

Would appreciate your comments.

Lesley

However, this was subsequently reversed: Hi Jan. Good to hear from you.

At 08:26 PM 5/19/01 -0700, you wrote: >Hi Lesley, > I have some bad news for you, I finally found out how old Susan > Boxer-Spearpoint was when she died. Well, that certainly seems to settle it, doesn't it? Susan Boxer Spearpoint married in 1744, so she would have been about 22, based on her age at death. Her last child was christened in 1763, when she'd have been 41. And she didn't name any of her children after her mother or father. Not unheard of, of course.

As you say, that leaves the field wide open for my Susan Boxer Morford who married in 1745! I will have to relay the bad news by snail mail to other researchers who (erroneously) came to the same conclusions as me. I now need to search for the post-1763 burial for Susan Boxer Morford and hope that her age is given so that I can sort out her parents. My fault for breaking one of the rules of genealogy - bury your dead! She might be the daughter of James and Elizabeth (bp 1709) - or she might even have been a widow when she married James Morford.

I will keep in touch and let you know what I find out. In the meantime, can you give me details of your descent from Susan Boxer Spearpoint?

Just to confirm what I mentioned previously, Sue in Australia is descended through Ann Boxer (sister of Susan) TART so you and she are definitely connected.

Lesley

Birth information from Folkestone SS Mary and Eanswyth Parish Register Call Number: U3/88 Note: NS18033

Susan and Hannah were twin Daughter's of Richard and Margaret Boxer.

I have a connection with Boxer's of Folkstone Kent. It is with a Susannah Boxer who married into the Morford family of Folkstone in 1745 a long way back I'm afraid.

They had a Margaret 1747, Mary 1749, Sarah 1751,Elizabeth 1759, Harriet 1764,James 1761. I suspect there were more children in between but haven't found them.

Peter Morford and Mary was James father 1722.

342 (Research):John Ryerson Kotchapaw was born on a cold January day in 1853 (13 Jan) on a farm in Sophiasburgh Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario. He was the first of seven children ( of whom five made it to adulthood).

His father, Reuben, settled on and farmed Lot 18, concession 2 with a mailing address of Demorestville RR 2. The computerized Land Records Index show registry on 3 Oct 1857 concerning CL Deed # 01 C113.

John farmed with his father.

He grew up in the same concession as Sarah Gorsline who he married on 11 Jun 1879 when he was 26.

John's father died a few months after their wedding, Reuben ,as the eldest son, inherited his father's farm. He continued to farm growing barley, hay and other cereals. They had a large barn (with hay loft) for the dairy cows, pigs, chickens and a horse or two. They lived in a large two storey farm house. They lived without electricity or indoor plumbing.

Sarah gave birth to 2 sons - Claude in 1885 and Bill in 1891. The boys helped with the milking of the cows by hand and with the large vegetable garden. They grew all their own vegetables. Sarah churned the cream and butter

In July 1899, Sarah became paralyzed and died .

John married Deborah Anderson on 23 Jan 1901. They did not have any children.

John's grandchildren Marion and Bill spent a whole summer in 1937 at the farm of their grandparents. Marion remembers John as being strong and handsome with a great white mustache. He loved to call people "Darlin". Grandma Deborah was a dear. Marion recalls that the horse that they had then was called Hazel. One of Marion's chores was to fetch the eggs (about 4-6 eggs) each morning. At that time, her uncle Claude was living across the street where he farmed. Claude's son Burt, 29 had attached/ latched a house onto his grandfathers and was farming there.

John died on 6 May 1940 at the age of 87.
