A family bible currently owned by Peter Francis of Caterham and apparantly written in by her father (see Photo L111) shows that Martha was born on 1st May 1818.

In the will of her grandmother (Doc346) Ruth Trussell, made in 1841 and proved in 1843, she is still named as a Francis (presumed unmarried) and left a cash sum of £10.

In her siser Sarah's will, made in July 1891 and proved in July 1894 she is shown as the late Martha Howarth and therefore died before July 1891. Her three named children Joseph, George and Reuben all receive £25 each and a share of the residue (Doc401).

General Notes: Husband - Robert PEARSON

In the 1891 Census (RG12/2924F90)(No copy) Robert is shown aged 31 born Liverpool living at the same address as his is laws (and as shown on the will mentioned below). Also at the address is a James Pearson aged 33, a lodger. This could well be a brother.

Originally came to notice as a result of his father-in-laws will, made in August 1894 and proved in February 1896, where Robert is shown as one of the executors, living at the same address as his father-in-law and an omnibus driver. However, he receives no legacy(Doc402).

General Notes: Wife - Martha FRANCIS

In the 1871 Census (RG10/3794F138)(No copy) she is shown aged 6 born Liverpool, living with her parents and siblings.

In the 1881 Census (RG11/3635F106) she is shown aged 16 living with her parents.

In the 1891 Census (RG12/2924F90)(No copy) Martha is shown born Liverpool but incorrectly as a lodger aged 36 instead as wife of 26 years. She is living with her husband. Also living at the same address are her parents and a Sarah Catterall, shown as a niece to her husband, aged 6. This could well be her own niece, the daughter of her sister Margaret, who married a Cathrell and had a daughter Sarah about that age.

In her aunt's will (Sarah Feilde nee Francis 1816-1894) made in July 1891 and proved in July 1894 she is named as Martha Pearson, the child of Ephraim Francis and left a part share of the residue (Doc 401).

In the will of her father, made in August 1894 and proved in February 1896, she is named as Martha Pearson and appears to be living with her parents as well as her husband. She is left a legacy of £10, plus one eight day clock in a mahogany case and a vase of Dresden ware. Her husband is one of the executors (Doc402).

         Spouse: DOROTHY (1814-1887) 187

General Notes: Husband - William SPURGIN

Wife shown in the 1851 Census as a widow and he therefore died before April that year.
See below re obtaining marriage P/R for signature comparison.
========================================================================== ===========
Photo's 65 and 66 are of his marriage licence (unable to photo copy) taken out by him on the 22nd January 1809 at the Dean and Chapter of St Pauls (Guildhall Library MS25,803/14 Folio 29). The licence shows him to be a bachelor, upwards of twenty one years and a farmer of Hatfield Peverel, Essex. The marriage is to take place at Heybridge parish. His signature on the licence is clearly Spurgin, which sorts out any query on his name (see will of Thomas Francis, below).

His marraige took place at Heybridge on 24th January 1809, by licence metioned above. He signs the register himself and one of the witnesses is John Spurgin, obviously related (Doc 400).

Doc 392 is a copy of a death duty register (PRO IR26/387F71) of a William Spurgin, who leaves property to a Sarah Spurgin, who later pays duty as Sarah Francis, and her brother William Spurgin the Younger, plus his brother John Spurgin. I have used this document to show that William and Sarah are brother and sister and that they in turn married sister and brother of the Francis family, but to be on the safe side am getting copies of the marriage above to compare against that of the witness at his sisters wedding (see her page).

Originally came to notice as result of his father-in-law's will (Doc300) proved in 1810 where his wife is left a legacy in her married name, although Mr Spurgin is left nothing.

Doc 330 is acopy of the marriage parish register of who I have assumed is his sister, Sarah, who married his wifes brother, George Francis. It appears that William signs as witness, although a comparison of signatures with that on his own marriage (see Doc 400 and above) although similar could not be said to definately be identical. He does however sign as "Wm" on both occassions, which is some evidence and I am reasonably certain that these two Williams are identcal.

Is named as "the late William Spurgeon" in the will of his brother-in-law, Thomas Francis (Doc309) proved in 1851 and obviously died before that year.

========================================================================== ===========
Photo's 65 & 66 are copies of her marriage licence (unable to photocopy) taken out by her husband William Spurgin on the 22nd January 1809 at the Dean and Chapter of St Pauls (Guildhall Library MS 25,803/14 Folio 29). The licence shows Mary aged upwards of 21 years and a spinster of Heybridge, with the marriage due to take place at that parish.

Mary appears identical with the marriage at Heybridge on 24th January 1809, by licence mentioned above. She signs the register herself and the witnesses signature matches that of her father (Doc400).

In her father's will proved in 1810(Doc300) "my daughter Mary Spurgin" is left the sum of £300 on the expiration of the lease of the farm at Heybridge Hall. As this is the only Mary born to this couple, it must be her married name. She is also named in the Death Duty Register (Doc294).

In the 1851 census (Doc 319) she is shown as Mary Spurgeon, aged 64, having been born at Stock Hall and a widow. She is living with her younger brother, Thomas.

In her brother Thomas's will (Doc309) made/proved in April/May 1851she is named as executor and left a quarter of the estate after conversion to cash.

Grave at St Mary Parish Church Broomfield Essex inscribed Mary/relict of William Spurgin formerly of Hatfiled Peverel who died May 11 1870 aged 83 years Her end was peace.

On 1861 census shown as living at the Angel inn Chelsmsford Rd Broomfield Essex with Dorothy Spurgin head Widow 49

In the April 1871 Canadian census for Markham, Ontario (No copy) William is shown aged 40, born England, of baptist religion and a farmer (info Harriett Nolan and Vicki Munro).

In the April 1881Canadian Census for Markham, Ontario (No copy) William is shown aged 50, a widower, born England, of baptist religion and a miller by trade. He was living with his three children Sarah 10, William 7 and Robert 4 (Info Harriett Nolan and Vicki Munro).

Apparantly his wife had died in 1878 and a Martha Polley, who had lived with William's parents, William and Sarah nee Polley for many years became William Henry's second wife (Info Harriett Nolan)

General Notes: Wife - Mary Ann FRANCIS

The parents of Mary Ann's husband were William Ratcliff and Sarah nee Polley. I have people of this name as one of the children of John Polley and Elizabeth Sallows and this seems too much of a coincidence. Enquiries in hand and who is the Martha Polley living with the Ratcliffes, see below)
========================================================================== ===========
All details of Mary were supplied by Harriet Nolan. Mary married a William Henry Ratcliff (date unknown) and had three children by him, Sarah born 1871, William born 1874 and Robert Born 1877. The family were in the sawmill business and Henry (William Henry) followed his father into this trade and then his son, Robert, took over. Robert provided a picnic park connected with the sawmill. Then the sons of Robert (Donald, Floyd and Howard-no further pars) jointly owned and operated the sawmill and the farn surrounding the Mill. In the 1940's Floyd remained with the farm while his brothers, Donald and Haoward continued with the mill. A Paul and Harold Ratcliff are now the 5th generationin the business. Until 1970 when the sawmill ceased operation water power was used. The family continues in the lumber trade with two outlets, one in Unionville and the other in Gormley. The Great Tree lying in the Ratcliff Industrial Park on the Whitechurch Town Line was there until lightning felled it in 1976 the last of the mighty giants William found on his arrival. The Mill, known now as Century Mill, is a township landmark.

In the April 1871 Canadian Census for Markham, Ontario, Canada Mary is shown aged 25, born Ontarion and living with her husband only (Info Harriett Nolan and Vicki Munro). For information Markham was a small township north of Toronto and still is, but the city has now expanded to swallow it up and, in our language, it is just a suburb.

Mary Ann died in Markham, Canada March 1878(Info Harriett Nolan).

General Notes: Husband - William TAGG

Original info from marriage in 1827, by licence. Shown as a batchelor of Peckham, Surrey.

Is named in his father-in-law's will dated 1848 (Doc 238) but is not a beneficiary.

In the 1851 Census (HO107/1580F91) William is shown as a butcher, aged 46, born Peckham Rye living with his wife and son, Charles, aged 15 also a butcher. Apart from a housemaid and a cook, there are four other teenage boys resident shown as butcher's and I suspect this was either a shop of cattle farm.

In the 1881 Census (RG11/676F75)(Doc 359) he is shown aged 77, born Peckham, Surrey, living with his wife and one servant.

While looking for the burial of his wife's uncle (Daniel Francis 1789-1864) I found the family grave of the Tagg family, which included Daniel, William and his wife. The grave in Plot 71 at Camberwell Old Cemetary has the following inscription on a marble obelisk and was clearly visible when visited in March 2000 " In memory of William Tagg/Born August 6 1803/Died November 4 1890/and of/Mary Ann, his wife/Born October 18, 1807/Died February 18, 1898/Also of Charles William/son of the above/born February 22nd 1836/Died January 9th 1895". At the bottom on a plinth is "The Family Grave of William and Mary Ann Tagg of Peckham Rye" (Photo L92). This grave site was apparantly purchased by his son, Charles, in 1860 and the Register of Purchasers shows that William was buried on the 5th November 1890, aged 87 (Doc 357)(Photo L91).

General Notes: Wife - Mary Ann FRANCIS

Original info from baptism entry in P/R in 1807.

Married in 1827 (No copy) by licence, with consent of parents. Shown as a spinster and was able to sign register. Witnesses are Hannah Francis, Elizabeth Francis, Robert Francis and others not apparantly related.

Her father's will Dated 1848 (Doc 238) confirms my assumption that she is the wife of William Tagg as above. She is to receive one sixth of the total legacy (£1500) on her mother's subsequent death.

In the 1851 Census (HO107/1580F91)(Doc 358) Mary Ann is shown aged 43, born Ulting living with her husband and one son, Charles aged 15, four servant/butchers, one cook and one housemaid (last two on next page and not copied).

In the 1881 census (RG11/676F75)(Doc 359) Mary Ann is shown aged 73, born Retling, Essex (no such place so wrong, but sounds like Ulting) living with her husband and one servant.

While looking for the burial of her uncle (Daniel Francis 1789-1864) I found the family grave of the Tagg family, which included Daniel and Mary Ann. This grave site was apparantly purchased by her son, Charles, in 1860 and the Register of Purchasers shows that Mary Ann was buried on the 21st February 1898 aged 90 years (Doc 357)(Photo L91).
