General Notes (Husband)

ALL information on Robert supplied by Hariet Nolan.
Baptised 4th June 1848 at Delaware Christs Church.
He was a loner and most adventurous as a young man. At one time he started for the Alaskan gold fields, but became a cook for the miners in the Yukon. No other clues to his whereabouts untill 1888 when his mail was addressed to Grand Porterage, Minnesota where he received the letter from his father telling of his mother's death in July of that year. A description of Grand Porterage taken from the Minnesota State Guide by Viking Press in 1933 is "SW from international border 49.4 miles from Canada. A swath through the woods, crossing the highway, marks the famed overland passage from Lake Superior to Pigeon River. This 9 mile portage was used by voyagers and fur tradeds to avoid the falls and rapids in Pigeon River (Chippawa Indian Area). This region is the most rugged in Minnesota. Mineral Centrer is a small village 5.8 miles from Grand Porerage" and is 1938 consisted of a few cabins and hi=ouses, ageneral store and post office....... and an old cabin used by historical museum, housing relics and indian handwork.
He had settled on Birch Island in MacCargoe Cove near Isle Royale and becams known as "Captain Francis", but research has shown that at no time was he a freighter or tanker skipper on the Great Lakes.
He did accomodate sportsmen who came to enjoy the escellent fly fishing to be found in the MacCargoe Cove.
He was an authority on the relics and ore deposits to be found on the Isle Royale. He helped an archeolory team from Wisconsin on their research of the ancient copper workings on Isle Royale and was mentioned many times in their report published in Volume 10, July to October 1911, number 2 quarterley bulletin of the Wisconsin Archeological Society.
In the late 1920's he moved to St Joseph, Michegan and lived with his sister Hannah until spring of 1929. Harriet Francis Marks and her husband went out to Michigan and brought them to Wilson, NYS to live. "Bob finding very little to do treturned to his step-daughter's home at 118 W. Palmetto Street, Duluth, Minnesota.
When he died Harriet Marks's husband went to Duluth to take care of Robert's affairs and found no large estate as he had reported. No will was probated. During his lifetime his middle name was changed from Lawrence to Livingston, as city directories listed him as Francis, Robert L., and Francis, Lawrence R., as a fisherman from 1910-1928, always living at 118 WPalmetto Street. Duluth Directories also list him as
a fisherman and captain of tugboat "T.R. Anderson" from 1894-1895 of the same address.

Commemorative Information
Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France
Grave Reference/
Panel Number: Pier and Face 10 D

Location: The Thiepval Memorial will be found on the D73, off the main Bapaume to Albert road (D929).

Historical Information: On 1 July 1916, supported by a French attack to the south, thirteen divisions of Commonwealth forces launched an offensive on a line from north of Gommecourt to Maricourt. Despite a preliminary bombardment lasting seven days, the German defences were barely touched and the attack met unexpectedly fierce resistance. Losses were catastrophic and with only minimal advances on the southern flank, the initial attack was a failure. In the following weeks, huge resources of manpower and equipment were deployed in an attempt to exploit the modest successes of the first day. However, the German Army resisted tenaciously and repeated attacks and counter attacks meant a major battle for every village, copse and farmhouse gained. At the end of September, Thiepval was finally captured. The village had been an original objective of 1 July. Attacks north and east continued throughout October and into November in increasingly difficult weather conditions. The Battle of the Somme finally ended on 18 November with the onset of winter. In the spring of 1917, the German forces fell back to their newly prepared defences, the Hindenburg Line, and there were no further significant engagements in the Somme sector until the Germans mounted their major offensive in March 1918. The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916. The memorial also serves as an Anglo-French Battle Memorial in recognition of the joint nature of the 1916 offensive and a small cemetery containing equal numbers of Commonwealth and French graves lies at the foot of the memorial. The memorial, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, was built between 1928 and 1932 and unveiled by the Prince of Wales, in the presence of the President of France, on 31 July 1932. The dead of other Commonwealth countries who died on the Somme and have no known graves are commemorated on national memorials elsewhere.

Email received in answer to my queries about his family. Questions
answered and this:-
"You may be interested to note that in keeping with the family
globe trotting tradition I was lucky enough to be selected for the
military team which made the first successful crossing of the North
Patagonian Ice Cap in Chile, a 6 months climbing, surveying and
scientific exploration 1972/3.
We have a book and newspaper cuttings of the expdition and even now
I am quite often called upon to lecture on this and other exploits
across the world.
Christine and I met through Scouting, both of us are now county
officials and still very active. Christine retired several years ago
on health grounds due to acute stress as the Head teacher of a local
school but has made a pretty good recovery and now runs her own
education consultancy part time.
We are both committed to voluntary work with children with special
needs, our house is the office admin centre for the local; dyslexia
association and we are both school governors, helping with some
teaching, specialist in Christines case.
Mark, our eldest lad is dyslexic, which set us in motion when he
came to live with us, to find out as much as possible to help him
progress."
