Harriet's notes have a further child, Fanny, born to this couple in 1852 and died 1853 but no place shown.
========================================================================== ===========
Robert was baptised in 1801 (Doc42) at Ulting. Photo L32 is of the church.
Robert (or his father) signs at witness at his sister, Mary Ann, wedding in 1827 (No copy).
Robert married in 1832(Doc 201) and confirmed the correct person by a copy of the marriage licence (Doc202) which shows him as aged 30.
In the 1841 Census (Ref HO107/339/2 Folio 24)(Doc 30) Robert is shown living with his wife Ann and daughters Jane, Mary, Charlotte, Ellen and Hannah at what I think reads Frarns Farm (but is unclear on this and subsequent Census).
In his mother-in-laws will made in 1837 and proved in 1842 he is, by codicil, named as executor (the first dying before the testator, but receives no legacy. Robert proved the will in May 1842.
Robert is shown as executor to his father's will (Doc238) written in 1848 and proved in 1849. He is given the option of buying premises called "Clements" in Langford parish for £400 and on his mother's death receives a sixth share of £1500.
In 1851 Census (Ref HO107/1778 Folio 695)(Doc 29) he is still living at the farm with his family. The two elder daughters aged 17 and 16 were shown born at Goldhanger, which tells me that this family only moved to Tolleshunt Darcy in the 1830's. The first appearance of great grandfather Robert (aged 2).
Confirming my thoughts in the 1851 census entry above, Doc 397 is an extract from a book called the Oxley Parker Papers (Oxley-Parker being a local estate/property owner also farmer and later mayor of Maldon), which state that Robert was granted a lease on Frame Farm (also sorts out correct name of this property) in or just after 1836 for 14 years, later altered to 21 years, for an annual rent of £270. The book outlines correspondence between the owners and his/her agent as regards rent and lateness of payment and paints Robert in a good light, apparantly he being a good tenent. In anongst the original documents at ERO, from which this book is compiled, (ERO D/DoP B123/264-358) are two letters (ERO ref 327 and 328) which are the originals written by Robert, dated August 1851 and January1853 sent by him when paying the rent on this farm. The book goes on to state that the farm was sold in 1865 while Robert was still there and it must be assumed he moved to St Clere's Hall soon after then.
In 1861 Census (Ref RG9/1091/5 Folio 7)(Doc 27) is shown with his wife and various children still at Tolleshunt Darcy. Shows place of birth as Ulting.
By 1871 Census (Ref RG10/1666 Folio 51)(Doc 26) had moved to Danbury and the Frame Farm at Tolleshunt Darcy is no longer occupied by the Francis Family. Place of birth shown as Ulting. He is shown living with his wife Ann, son Robert and daughters Charlotte and Elizabeth.
In the 1873 Return of Owners of Land, the only Robert Francis shown as owning land in Essex (494 acres) is living in Ipswich. I suppose it's the right one.
Photo L51 is of Robert (supplied by Harriett Nolan) and taken C1874 when aged about 73 yrs.
Is probably the witness at the wedding of his son William Fairhead in 1874 (Cert 191).
The 1881 Census (RG11/1767F61)(Doc307) shows Robert living with his wife, daughters Charlotte and Ellen (both unmarried) and son Robert (my great grandfather) with two maids and a groom.
Robert died on the 16th January 1885 (Cert 43) and was buried at Danbury (Doc 323) on the 22nd January.
Memorial Inscription reads 'In memory of Robert Francis who died January 16th 1885 Aged 83 years The weary are at rest' also 'In memory of Ann wife of Robert Francis Died Dec 30 1891 Aged 81 years Her end was peace'
In his will (Doc 32 probated 1885)the family home at St Clares Hall, Danbury was left to his son Robert (g g father) to buy which apparantly he did not and went out of the family ownership. I think these are the deeds that my brother John has. Photos L52, L53 and L54 are of St Cleres Hall, (supplied by Harriett Nolan) taken in September 1998 and the latter is apparantly of the farm cottages which were once occupied by the farm workers.
Robert is buried, along with his wife, at St John the Baptist Parish Church, Danbury. His gravestone, which is barely readable when visited in April 1997, reads "In the memory of Robert Francis who died January 16th 1885 Aged 83 years There the gentle(?) are at rest". See Photo L11 & L12.
LATER HISTORY OF THE MANOR OF ST. CLERES
> Although the house remained the property of the Lords of the Manor
> until the early 20th C and although the Leete Courts were held there
> it was never occupied by the family and became a farmhouse.
> During the first half of the 19thc the tennant was Isaac Belcher,
> whose family had lived in Danbury from the reign of Queen Anne.
> About 1851 the Belchers were succeeded by the Argents and later,
> by the Speakmans. The house which has been re fronted, is clearly
> much older inside than would appear from without, and it has a very
> fine ancient barn.
The partial transcript shown below shows that Robert Francis (1801-1885), later of St Clere's Hall fame, also owned Joyces Farm, which I know some of you visited during your individual forays into Essex. This is the first time I have found anything to say that this farm was in occupation of the Francis family, but in view of your interest perhaps you know more than me. If anyone has a photo of the place, I'd be grateful for a copy.

Confirmed by death certificate (cert122). Died at New London Road, Chelmsford, Essex.

General Notes: Wife - Ann POLLEY
Ann was probably living with her daughter Mary Ketley at New London Rd, Chelmsford in 1891 cenus, but there is no street index and a couple of reels of film to search to find her. It seems sensible to wait for the 1891 Census index if and when it is completed.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ann is shown as inheriting £802 cash in her father's administration as shown in the Death Duty Register of 1828 (Doc292).
Ann was married in 1832(Doc 201) and is also named, and shown age 21, on the marriage licence (Doc202). On the parish register two witnesses amongst others are John Polley and David Polley, possibly her brothers (John is not her father as he died some four years previous).
In the 1841 Census (Doc 30) Ann is shown living with her husband and five daughters.
Ann receives one fourth part of the residue of her mother's estate in her will dated 1837 and proved in 1842 (Doc281).
Originally came to notice with her maiden name, in her son's (Robert) birth certificate in 1849 (Cert 28).
By 1851 Census (Doc 29) she is shown with husband four daughters and son Robert (my great grandfather) aged 2.
In 1861 Census (Doc 27) is shown with husband and various children. Shown born Sandon, Essex
In 1871 Census (Doc 26) is shown with husband, son Robert and daughters Charlotte and Elizabeth. Shown born sandon, Essex.
In 1881 Census (Doc307) is still living with husband, son Robert and two daughters Charlotte and Ellen.
In her husbands will (Doc 32 Probated 1885) Ann is left the premises owned by them at Ulting, Essex together with whatever fixture and fittings she wants from St Clares (Cleres) Hall in Danbury (the latter to be sold to their son Robert Alfred).
Ann died in 1891 (Cert 122) refers. She left a will, with her son Robert Alfred Francis and son-in-law, Charles Everard, farmers, as executors, the will being proved on the 23 Mary 1892. Effects were £59 13s 5d.and apart from ten guineas to each of the executors, she divides her estate among her ten named children.
Ann is buried, along with her husband, at St John the Baptist Parish Church, Danbury. Her side of the stone is partly unreadable, when visited in April 1997, but reads "(first line too feint) Ann wife of Robert Francis Died Dec 30 1891 Aged 81 years". See Photos L11 & L12.

General Notes: Child - Charlotte FRANCIS
Charlotte appears as a 4 year old on the 1841 Census (Doc 30) living with her parents and sisters.
She does NOT appear in the 1851 Census (Doc 29) with family.
Charlotte again appears with her parents and siblings in the 1861 Census (Doc 27) as unmarried aged 23.
Appears living with parents in 1871 Census (Doc 26).
In the 1881 Census (DOc307) Charlotte is shown aged 43 and unmarried, living with her parents.
In her fathers will (Doc 32 probated 1885) she was left a sum of money.

General Notes: Child - William Fairhead FRANCIS
First and only appearance with family is in 1861 Census (Doc 27) as aged 18 and living with his parents.
Wiliam married in 1874 at Willingale Doe (Cert 191). He is shown as a bachelor of full age. He was able to sign the register himself and the witnesses are probably his father and brother Robert, although the latter is shown as Robert J. Is one of three Francis brothers who married three Caton sisters.
Appears identical with the 1881 Census (RG11/1778F80)(No copy) shown as William F Francis, aged 38 (perfect fit) living with his wife and three children, their names being identical to the information supplied to me by Harriett Nolan.
In his fathers will (Doc 32 probated 1885) William is shown as an executor and is also left a sum of money.
In his mother's will (Doc160), made in 1885 and probated in 1892, receives a tenth part of the legacy.
A W.Francis is shown as witness on the wedding certificate of this mans brother Robert (Cert 23) in 1889. Although no certainty it was William I have no other possibilities at this time.
Originally came to notice where he is named in Father-in-laws will of 1901(Doc124) although receives no legacy.
Grave noted in records in Goldhanger church died Jan 17th 1922 aged 79 years, buried with Constance Marie Francis died Nov 5th 1927 and Ellen Jane died June 25th 1928 aged 75 years.

Abraham married in 1884 (Cert 190) at Willingale Doe. He is shown aged 41, a bachelor. He was able to sign the certificate himself and one of the witnesses (among others) is probably his brother Robert Alfred.
He is one of three Francis brothers who married three caton sisters.
In the 1891 Census (Ref RG12/1399 F79)(Doc 308) Abraham is shown living with his wife and 5 year old daughter.
Named in his father-in-law's will (Doc 124) in 1901 but receives no legacy.
General Notes: Child - Elizabeth FRANCIS
Is shown in the 1851 Census (Doc 29) aged 5 years and living with her parents.
She does not appear with her family in the 1861 Cenus (Doc 27).
Elizabeth appears in the 1871 Census (Doc 26) living with her parents and aged 25 and unmarried.
In the 1881 Census (RG11/1778F85) she appears as a 35 year old single woman acting as housekeeper at her brother Abraham's farm.
An E.Francis is shown as witness on the wedding certificate of her brother Robert (Cert 23) in 1889. Although no certainty it was her, if it was she was still unmarried at age 43.
In her fathers will (Doc 32 probated 1885) she was left a sum of money. No mention of a husband or married name, as is the case with other daughters, and therefore still single.
In her mother's will (Doc160), made in 1885 and probated in 1892, is left a tenth part of the legacy.
In her second cousin Sarah's will (daughter of Daniel Francis 1789-1864), made in July 1891 and proved in July 1894, she is shown as cousin and daughter of Robert Francis late of St Cleres Hall, Danbury and left a legacy of £25 cash (Doc 401). Still a Francis and apparantly unmarried.

In the 1851 Census (Doc 29) is shown aged 3 living with her parents.
Harriet makes no further appearances with her family in the 1861 (Doc 27) or subsequent Census returns. Fate unknown at this time.
In her fathers will (Doc 32 probated 1884) all children are left a sum of money. In all he mentions only eight children, not Harriet, although ten were born.
In her mother's will (Doc160), made in 1885 and probated in 1892, she is left a tenth part of the legacy. Named as Francis and therefore assumed still unmarried.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Robert is shown in the 1851 Census (Ref HO107/1778 Folio 695)(Doc 29) aged 2 living with parents and some sisters.
Robert does NOT appear in the 1861 Census (Doc 27) with his parents.
He again appears in the 1871 Census (Doc 26) at St Clares Hall with his parents and two sisters aged 22 and unmarried.
In the 1881 Census (Doc307) Robert is aged 32, still living with parents and two sisters and is unmarried.
Is probalbly the Robert A Francis who signs as a witness at his brother Abraham's marriage in 1884 (Cert 190).
According to his fathers death certificate (Number 43) in 1885 Robert was present at the death and presumed still living there
In his fathers will (Doc 32 probated 1885) Robert is offered the premises of St Clares (Cleres) Hall to buy at current market value, which as he was next seen as a working man, I assume he declined or could not afford it. He was also left a sum of money like all the other children.
Shamefully, in 1889, Robert was apparantly "obliged" to marry (Cert 23) Clara (he being aged 40 and she 22 would I complain) with Nan arriving some two months after the wedding.Marriage certificate shows witnesses E. J. Francis and W. F.Francis, who I would hazard a guess are his brother William fairhead and his wife Eleen Jane nee Ccaton but there is no certainty. One of three Francis brothers who married three Caton sisters.
By the 1891 Census (Ref RG12/1365 Folio 37) (Doc 28) he was living with his wife Clara, Nan aged 1 and son aged 5 months at Hill Farm, Willingale Doe.
In his mother's will (Doc160), made in 1885 and probated in 1892, he is shown as an executor and receives ten guineas plus a tenth part of the residue.
