General Notes: Husband - Henry FRANCIS

IF NOTES BELOW ARE CORRECT he was married in 1837 (Doc 341)(Guildhall Library MS 7859/3 Page124). He was shown as a bachelor of this parish (St Dunstans, London), the marriage being by licence. He was able to sign the register himself and the witnesses do not appear related.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++

All info from Doreen Rice. Notes below show he was born July1811 and married his cousin, Sarah Francis, daughter of Robert. The marriage P/R shows her of the parish of Northfleet, kent, where we know that George was living with his wife and children, one of whom was a Sarah and this may be her. However in view of Doreen's note that sarah was a daughter of Robert, this will need to be verified. No details of any children shown, nor any being barpitised at St Dunstans in the following five years after the marriage. Doreen is not certain that this man is son of Joshua and finding his baptism would help.

I have tried looking for his marriage allegation/licence at ERO, GLRO and Guildhall Library (London licences) without success.

BRITISH SETTLERS IN NATAL a Biographical; Register 1824-57
Vol 6 Eagle-Fyrie by Shelagh O'Byrne University of NATAL.
A four page article about Henry FRANCIS born July 1811 in South
House Nr Maldon Essex.
Baker,Farmer,Hotel Keeper and Toll Keeper.
He apparently lived in Northfleet,Kent, prior to moving to Canada
shortly after his marriage in 1837, to his cousin Sarah, daughter
of Robert Francis. He was involved some way in one of the
rebellions which took place in that country around 1837 .His
Obituary mentions Ontario as his place of residence in Canada so
presumably it was the Ontario rebellion of Dec 1837 in which he was
involved The article states that presumably they were also in
America as he took American Cotton Seed with him to Africa. They
went to Port Elizabeth where they had relatives . They landed in
Natal in 1843. The article follows his various careers and much of
his correspondence with Government authorities culminating in the
report of his death in Umgeni Durban 19 Feb 1884,followed by the
death of his widow in Mar 1886.

GREAT GALE
SHIPWRECKS AND LOSS OF LIFE
DISASTER AT LAND'S END
LIVERPOOL VESSEL WRECKED
TWENTY THREE MEN DROWNED
GRAPHIC ACCOUNT OF LOSS OF KHYBER
A great gale raged from the south west during Tuesday night and
yesterday morning around the British Isles causing
shipwrecks,interupting telegraphic communications,doing much
damage to property and involving considerable loss of life. The
disorganised state of the telegraphservice with many parts of the
United Kingdom had prevented the receipt up to last evening of all
but the mosdt meagre details of the casualtiesd that have occurred
on various parts of the coast.
By far the most serious disaster yet recorded has occured at the
little fishing village of Sennen facing the Longships Lighthouse at
lands End. A telegram handed in at Penzance at 10.30 yesterday
morning said "The barque Khyber has been lost at Sennen.Twenty
three of those on boartd were drowned" This brief private message
did not reach london until twenty minutes past three in the
afternoon, having taken practically five hours in transmission. The
Khyber was an iron ship of 2026 tons, built in 1880 by WH Potter and
Son,Liverpool. She belonged to the Gaslgate Shipping Company,of
which Messrs J.Joyce and Co of North John Street are managers.
During Friday night, when the wind blew a hurricane from the south
west very heavy seas ran all round the coast. The barque Khyber put
into Millbar,a little creek near Lands end and dropped anchor.Their
position was most perilous and every moment increased it. She was
in momentary danger of foundering and efforts were made to launch
the Sennen lifeboat, This was found to be impossible on account of
the heavy sea and the lifesaving apparatus could not be used for
some reason or other. The Penzance lifeboat was called out and was
towed by theLady of the Isles to the scene but before they reached
Lands End the Khyber had foundered and only three crew had been
saved by means of a cliff ladder.
Thus after a practical immunity for two years from disastrous
shipwreck, the rock bound coast of Lands Endhas again been the scene
of a terrible disaster. The three men saved are:-I Harris, eighteen
of Victoria.Australia,apprentice;Gun Johnson,a Swede and J.Willis
of Liverpool.Their escape can only be described as miraculous
considering the circumstances and surpasses anything ever depicted
in fiction. They were too exhausted and upset - Harris and johnson
being so severely injured -to dilate on their terrible experiences
to a representative who saw them just after the rescue, but it was
Page 1
possible from what they said coupled with the narratives of their
resuers, top gain full knowledge of their vessel's end. THE KHYBER'S
STRUGGLE
The Khyber, last October, left Melbourne for Falmouth with a cargo
of wheat.Till the present gale all went well, and the crew on
Tuesday were reckoning on the fine time they would have at Falmouth
but their hopes were doomed to be dispelled in a terrible manner. A
terrific gale from the south west on Tuesday severely damaged the
sails and at 8.30pm when the Lizard light was sighted the
vessel, had become unmanagable, Then she started to drift towards
the deadly shore despite the desperate efforts made by the crew to
prevent this. Their plight was a pitiable one as all their boats
had been stashed away and their signals of distress were unseen. By
10 o'clock the Khyber was about four hundred yards from
Porthgwerra, having drifted right across Mount's Bay,and here both
anchors were dropped. They did their duty nobly and despite the
terrible gale, they held firm until about seven o'clock yesterday
morning, whenthey started to drag. Strange to say, up to this time
their signals of distress had not been observed from the shore,or a
rescue could have been effected, but it was not until some men were
proceeding to work at the new coastguard station that the vessel's
plight was noticed. Then the alarm was immediately raised, and the
life saving apparatus from Sennen was fetched, but by this time it
was too late. The cables of the unfortunate ship had parted, and
she was driven stern first on the rocks where she broke up
immediatly.
SURVIVORS WONDERFUL ESCAPE
For some time previously the crew had been in the rigging,it being
impossible to stay on deck with the tremendous sea running, and when
the masts fell, all but the three were swallowed up by the seething
waves and seen no more. Just before this however, Willis had
jumped overboard and with the aid of floating wreckage, succeeded in
reaching the shore where, fortunately,he was subsequently
found, still living, though it required nearly an hour's artificial
respiration to bring him around. Harris and Johnson in the meantime
had clambered over the vessel's side and gained a rock thirty feet
away from the cliff where they were momentarily safe, though as the
tide was rising they were in imminent danger, unless rescue came
speedily,of being swept away by the hungry waves. Their rescue was
effected in what is doubtless a unique manner. A ladder was
procured from the nearest building, and a rope, having been thrown to
the apparently doomed men, it was then fastened to the end of the
ladder which was lowered to the rock and then made fast at the top
to the cliffs. The angle was such that Harris and Johnson had to
crawl almost flat along and over the intervening space to reach
safety and this with huge waves ,almost appearing to increase in
ferocity as they saw their prey escaping, raging but a foot or so
below them and getting closer every minute. Both men by this time
were terribly exhausted and Johnson,in addition, had received
severe injuries to his head and leg,but to the intense relief of
the anxious spectators each man accomplished the terrible passage
from certain death safely.
By now the Khyber was no more, and the terrifiv violence of the
Page 2
waves can be judged from the fact that the pile of wreckage were
reduced absolutely to matchwood on the beach. This and a perfect
field of floating grain were all that remained to show that a fine
vessel had just been engulfed. The three surviors were taken every
care of and later proceeded to Penzance . Up to the present,no
bodies have been recovered.
Harris said that a small steamer passed them during the night
without taking any notice of their distress signals.
The Penzance lifeboat was towed to the scene of the wreck
yesterday morning but arrived too late to be of any service.
Amongst those drowned are Captain Rothery of Cumberland;Harry
Allen and K Page First and Second Mates and Ableseamen J
Laidlow;W.Weddell; H.McGarvin;P.Gest;J.Steinberg; A.Linderbald;
C.Drew;S.Lindsay;Reynolds; ???; ???; C.Cuthries;C.Hyde; H.Owen;
R.Lloyd; and T.Broddy (cabin boy)
A Plymouth telegram in a list of the drowned, adds the names of
(unable to read names one Portugese, the other Japanese) and the
ship's carpenter and Sailmaker whose names apparently have not been
listed.
Including the ship's carpenter an sailmaker, this list accounts for
twenty two,leaving one man unidentified.

Found at Liverpool Library April 1997.
