"Yes Alfred was my mother's second cousin, and Captain of a 'laker'
called the "City of Windsor". We lived on the WElland River, that
ran parralel to the Welland Canal. The shiops used to blow their
whistles three times, for the lift bridge to open. When we heard a
ship blow fopur times it was "uncle Alf" and we used to run out and
wave to him as his ship went by. I vaguely remember my mother and
Dad holding up the twins, and waving to him.

Yes! I do know a little about Alfred in Canada, (my Dad's youngest
brother-John Thompson 1876) and I remember meeting his adopted son
Jack during or just after the war, when I was a lad and he arrived
in his Canadian Airforce Uniform, complete with flying jacket-my
hero.
I believe he really was a hero, as he survived being sshot down in
his bomber over enemy occupied France, as indeed was his Dad, Alf,
who was severely wounded as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces,
in the First World War and was hospitalised in of all places -
Wallasey.
Alf, as far as I know, is supposed to have stowed away on a ship
to Canada, when he met stewardess Adelaide. He later became a Great
Lakes Captain and Port Captain of Toronto, which I believe is an
honorary title for services to the port.
If we can contact Jack, we will be able to confirm this and
probably a lot more happenings in Canada. I know my Dad was in
contact with Jack before he hhad to go into full time nursing care,
so it is possible that my mother Sylvia (89) is still in contact
-or has his address- I'll try her tomorrow.
Sorry I can't help with Bailey or Murray as yet but perhaps Jack can
solve this one.
I also remember from war time, a contact in the Isle of Man, so
I'll pursue that line of enquiry as well.
Quite exciting -isn't it?
Our dog Jasper has duties as a Pat Dog at Dad's nursing Home.

giving birth to John Alfred in 1920
