General Notes: Husband - Robert FRANCIS

In his will he names the premises of Stock Hall, Ulting and Clements, Langford but I was unable to find Robert and his wife in either parish, nor mention of the premises in the 1841 Census. His son Thomas was living at Stock Hall in 1851 but again no trace of either Roberts other son's or Clements at Langford in 1851. Probably sold after his death in 1849 and a deed may be at ERO to confirm (option to purchase Clements given to son Robert but he was living elsewhere in 1851).
Doreen Rice in Oz has two other children to this couple, Charles and Sarah, but not Harriet's notes. For investigation.
Frances Marks Landy (a decendent) is in possession of an old hair brooch showing Roberts death date.
According to Harriet's notes he was an MP for maldon in 1826 - wrong poll books seen. Voted but not a candidate.
Burial date of Robert at Langford. Registers not yet deposited at ERO.
Dating of photos of Stock Hall L47/48.
Oz say had one more child, Charles, born 1822, place not known.

Robert was born at Ulting, Essex in 1778 and baptised in 1880 (Doc43) at Ulting. Photo L32 is of the church.

Robert married in 1800 (ERO DP261/1/3)(Doc 240) by licence, although no copy of licence is at ERO. Witnesses are not family members. Signed the register himself.

Originally came to notice as result of baptisms of various children between 1801 and 1812.

He is shown as joint executor of his father's will proved in 1810 (Doc300) and is left ten acres called Holmes Mead in Ulting/Langford, use of the house and farm at Stock Hall, Ulting until the death of his mother (to pay her £100 per year as rent for same) and the option to buy Stock Hall at current market value, on her death. He is also named in the Death Duty register (Doc294).

Photos L108 & L109 are of Stock Hall, Ulting, as mentioned in his father's will shown above, and the fanily home for many years.

He (or his son Robert) signs as witness at his daughter's, Mary Ann, wedding in 1827 (No copy).

Doc 238 (ERO 79 CR 22) is a copy of Robert's will written in 1848 which shows his occupation as a farmer of Stock Hall, Ulting but also mentions another dwelling house called "Clements" at Langford (the next parish. Each legacy is shown under the various children but in the main he splits his money equally between them after the demise of his wife, until then it is invested and the proceeds given to her. The will is proved in May 1849.

Robert died in January 1849 aged 70 years at Ulting (Cert 168). The person shown present at death was a Hannah Herbert (the same lady also present at his wife's death some seven years later) who signed by her mark and is not apparantly related.

Robert is buried along side his wife, at St Giles Church, Ulting. His stone when seen in July 1999 is clearly readable as follows, "In // Memory of // Robert Francis // late of Stock Hall Ulting // who died Jan 21st 1849 // Aged 70 years". Photo L ?? is of the stone and L?? of the church.

Photos L46, L47 and L48 are of Stock Hall, Ulting, Robert's home for some considerable time, although I am at present unable to date the last two or identify the people in them.

Death Notes: Wife - Hannah FAIRHEAD

------ From Source Attached To: Death ------
Confirmed by death certificate (Cert 169). Died at Ulting, Essex.
-----------------------------------------------

General Notes: Wife - Hannah FAIRHEAD

Having found Hannah's marriage in 1800 I am left with a problem. Another Hannah Fairhead married in Bradwell in 1796 this one to a Charles Plastow. The problem is that I can only find one Hannah being baptised in the village (in 1773), to an Edward and Susannah, so am not sure if this one is mine. I have found an Amey Fairhead (baptised 1775), named witness at Hannah's wedding but she is the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth. I have also found an Amy marrying in 1801, but she appears to young to be the same one and in any case the signatures appear different. However, witnesses at Hannah's wedding are Moses Ardley, and Mary Wade and at Amy's, Elizabeth Ardley, Elizabeth Wade and Thomas Fairhead so possibly they are the same. Who knows yet? All details from P/R searched from 1756-1796 are attached to these notes, together with a sheet showing who belongs to whom in brief form.
I must look for any wills at ERO of any Fairheads between say 1750 and 1800 at, or near, Bradwell and hope that they shed some more light.
If not settlement papers appear the next choice or maybe even the IGI/FS.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++
Hannah was married in 1800 (Doc 240). She was able to sign the register herself and a witness was an Amey Fairhead, obviously a relative.

Originally came to notice as result of various childrens baptisms between 1801 and 1812.

In her husbands will, written in 1848 (Doc238) Hannah is to receive £100 and a choice of furniture china etc. Her husbands wishes to convert all his lands to money (about £1500) invest this and Hannah is to receive the interest until she dies.

In the 1851 Census (HO107/1783P288)(Doc239) Hannah is shown as a 77 year old (from which year of birth obtained) widow of independant means. Her place of birth shown (Bradwell, Essex) and she has obviously moved out of Stock Hall as her address is shown as a cottage. Possibly still on the Stock Hall lands as that premises, now occupied by her son Thomas and his family, is on the same census page. The only other occupant is a Sarah Everet, a 16 year old servant.

Hannah died in August 1856, aged 82, at Ulting (Cert 169). The person shown present at death a Hannah Herbert (the same person as at her husbands) signed by her mark and is not apparantly related.

Hannah is buried, alongside her husband, at St Giles Church, Langford. Her stone when seen in July 1999 is clearly readable as follows " In // Memory of // Hannah // Relict of // Robert Francis // who died August 22 1856 // Aged 82 years". Photo L ?? is of the stone and L?? of the church.

Harriet's notes have a further child, Fanny, born to this couple in 1852 and died 1853 but no place shown.
========================================================================== ===========
Robert was baptised in 1801 (Doc42) at Ulting. Photo L32 is of the church.

Robert (or his father) signs at witness at his sister, Mary Ann, wedding in 1827 (No copy).

Robert married in 1832(Doc 201) and confirmed the correct person by a copy of the marriage licence (Doc202) which shows him as aged 30.

In the 1841 Census (Ref HO107/339/2 Folio 24)(Doc 30) Robert is shown living with his wife Ann and daughters Jane, Mary, Charlotte, Ellen and Hannah at what I think reads Frarns Farm (but is unclear on this and subsequent Census).

In his mother-in-laws will made in 1837 and proved in 1842 he is, by codicil, named as executor (the first dying before the testator, but receives no legacy. Robert proved the will in May 1842.

Robert is shown as executor to his father's will (Doc238) written in 1848 and proved in 1849. He is given the option of buying premises called "Clements" in Langford parish for £400 and on his mother's death receives a sixth share of £1500.

In 1851 Census (Ref HO107/1778 Folio 695)(Doc 29) he is still living at the farm with his family.The two elder daughters aged 17 and 16 were shown born at Goldhanger, which tells me that this family only moved to Tolleshunt Darcy in the 1830's. The first appearance of great grandfather Robert (aged 2).

Confirming my thoughts in the 1851 census entry above, Doc 397 is an extract from a book called the Oxley Parker Papers (Oxley-Parker being a local estate/property owner also farmer and later mayor of Maldon), which state that Robert was granted a lease on Frame Farm (also sorts out correct name of this property) in or just after 1836 for 14 years, later altered to 21 years, for an annual rent of £270. The book outlines correspondence between the owners and his/her agent as regards rent and lateness of payment and paints Robert in a good light, apparantly he being a good tenent. In anongst the original documents at ERO, from which this book is compiled, (ERO D/DoP B123/264-358) are two letters (ERO ref 327 and 328) which are the originals written by Robert, dated August 1851 and January1853 sent by him when paying the rent on this farm. The book goes on to state that the farm was sold in 1865 while Robert was still there and it must be assumed he moved to St Clere's Hall soon after then.

In 1861 Census (Ref RG9/1091/5 Folio 7)(Doc 27) is shown with his wife and various children still at Tolleshunt Darcy. Shows place of birth as Ulting.

By 1871 Census (Ref RG10/1666 Folio 51)(Doc 26) had moved to Danbury and the Frame Farm at Tolleshunt Darcy is no longer occupied by the Francis Family. Place of birth shown as Ulting. He is shown living with his wife Ann, son Robert and daughters Charlotte and Elizabeth.

In the 1873 Return of Owners of Land, the only Robert Francis shown as owning land in Essex (494 acres) is living in Ipswich. I suppose it's the right one.

Photo L51 is of Robert (supplied by Harriett Nolan) and taken C1874 when aged about 73 yrs.

Is probably the witness at the wedding of his son William Fairhead in 1874 (Cert 191).

The 1881 Census (RG11/1767F61)(Doc307) shows Robert living with his wife, daughters Charlotte and Ellen (both unmarried) and son Robert (my great grandfather) with two maids and a groom.

Robert died on the 16th January 1885 (Cert 43) and was buried at Danbury (Doc 323) on the 22nd January.
Memorial Inscription reads 'In memory of Robert Francis who died January 16th 1885 Aged 83 years The weary are at rest' also 'In memory of Ann wife of Robert Francis Died Dec 30 1891 Aged 81 years Her end was peace'

In his will (Doc 32 probated 1885)the family home at St Clares Hall, Danbury was left to his son Robert (g g father) to buy which apparantly he did not and went out of the family ownership. I think these are the deeds that my brother John has. Photos L52, L53 and L54 are of St Cleres Hall, (supplied by Harriett Nolan) taken in September 1998 and the latter is apparantly of the farm cottages which were once occupied by the farm workers.

Robert is buried, along with his wife, at St John the Baptist Parish Church, Danbury. His gravestone, which is barely readable when visited in April 1997, reads "In the memory of Robert Francis who died January 16th 1885 Aged 83 years There the gentle(?) are at rest". See Photo L11 & L12.

LATER HISTORY OF THE MANOR OF ST. CLERES
> Although the house remained the property of the Lords of the Manor
> until the early 20th C and although the Leete Courts were held there
> it was never occupied by the family and became a farmhouse.
> During the first half of the 19thc the tennant was Isaac Belcher,
> whose family had lived in Danbury from the reign of Queen Anne.
> About 1851 the Belchers were succeeded by the Argents and later,
> by the Speakmans. The house which has been re fronted, is clearly
> much older inside than would appear from without, and it has a very
> fine ancient barn.

The partial transcript shown below shows that Robert Francis (1801-1885), later of St Clere's Hall fame, also owned Joyces Farm, which I know some of you visited during your individual forays into Essex. This is the first time I have found anything to say that this farm was in occupation of the Francis family, but in view of your interest perhaps you know more than me. If anyone has a photo of the place, I'd be grateful for a copy.

In the 1881 census index (RG11/1404F30)(No copy) William Pavitt age 77, general labourer, born Little hallingbury and Elizabeth, wife, aged 75 (out by 3 years) and born Little Confield, Essex. This may be Elizabeth and her husband but the place of birth and age for her are wrong.
========================================================================== ===========
Originally came to notice as result of her baptism in 1803.

Apparantly signs as a witness at the wedding of her sister, Mary Ann, in 1827 (No copy).

Is shown in her father's will in 1848 (Doc238) as the wife of William Pavitt and receives one sixth share of everything on her mother's death. The total legacy was about £1500.

Original info from baptism entry in P/R in 1804.

Signed as a witness at the wedding of her sister, Mary Ann, in 1827 (No copy).

Information on Hannah's marriage in 1832 obtained from transcripts only. This is assumed the same person and no exact research made.

Confirming the entry regarding Hannah's marriage above, she is shown as the wife of George Putley in her father's will dated 1848 (Doc238). She is to receive one sixth of the total legacy (£1500) on the subsequent death of her mother.

General Notes: Child - Mary Ann FRANCIS

Original info from baptism entry in P/R in 1807.

Married in 1827 (No copy) by licence, with consent of parents. Shown as a spinster and was able to sign register. Witnesses are Hannah Francis, Elizabeth Francis, Robert Francis and others not apparantly related.

Her father's will Dated 1848 (Doc 238) confirms my assumption that she is the wife of William Tagg as above. She is to receive one sixth of the total legacy (£1500) on her mother's subsequent death.

In the 1851 Census (HO107/1580F91)(Doc 358) Mary Ann is shown aged 43, born Ulting living with her husband and one son, Charles aged 15, four servant/butchers, one cook and one housemaid (last two on next page and not copied).

In the 1881 census (RG11/676F75)(Doc 359) Mary Ann is shown aged 73, born Retling, Essex (no such place so wrong, but sounds like Ulting) living with her husband and one servant.

While looking for the burial of her uncle (Daniel Francis 1789-1864) I found the family grave of the Tagg family, which included Daniel and Mary Ann. The grave in Plot 71 at Camberwell Old Cemetary has the following inscription on a marble obelisk and was clearly visible when visited in March 2000 " In memory of William Tagg/Born August 6 1803/Died November 4 1890/and of/Mary Ann, his wife/Born October 18, 1807/Died February 18, 1898/Also of Charles William/son of the above/born February 22nd 1836/Died January 9th 1895". At the bottom on a plinth is "The Family Grave of William and Mary Ann Tagg of Peckham Rye" (Photo L92). This grave site was apparantly purchased by her son, Charles, in 1860 and the Register of Purchasers shows that Mary Ann was buried on the 21st February 1898 aged 90 years (Doc 357)(Photo L91).

General Notes: Child - Thomas FRANCIS

From Harriet's notes, is shown buried at St Giles (assume Langford) but no date shown.
Is possibly identical with uncatalogued photo's I have of graves at Langford Church, but maybe death parish registers will show more when available. One grave shows of Stock hall aged 76 and possibly dying in 1883.
Remarried some time between 1871 and 1881.
========================================================================== ===========
Originally came to notice as result of his baptism in 1812.

In the 1841 Census (HO107/339ED1F4)(No copy) Thomas was living with his wife and one child.

Is named in his father's will written in 1848 (Doc 238) and proved in 1849 for which he is one of the executors. Lucky Thomas is bequeathed all his father beers, wines and liquors as well as all brewing utensils. He is also given the opportunity to buy his father's home (Stock Hall, Ulting) for an unspecified fair market value and also a one sixth share of the total legacy (£1500) on his mother's subsequent death. He seems to have been treated better than his brothers and sisters.

Photo's L108 & L109 are of Stock Hall, Ulting Thomas's apparant family home for most, if not all, of his life.

In the 1851 Census (Doc239) he is shown aged 39 living with his wife and four children at Stock Hall so obviously took up the option to purchase as shown in his father's will (see above). Also present at his home are a brother and sister of his wife and a nine year old servant.

In the 1861 Census (RG9/1108F4)(No copy) he is shown aged 49, a widower living withhis daughter Anna and son Robert.

ERO ref D?acL 1839 shows marriage licence dated 12th Mar 1839 of Thomas Francis and Eliza Peake

In the 1871 Census (RG10/1695F109)(Doc 405) Thomas is shown aged 59, a widower, living at Stock Hall with two sons, one daughter, a vistor Elizabeth Darley and one servant.

In the 1881 Census (RG11/1777F108)(No copy) he is shown aged 69 living with his second wife, Mary and one daughter, Anna (by his first wife) plus two servants.

On his daughter , Anna's, marriage certificate in September 1881 one of the witnesses is Thomas Francis. This could either be him or his son Thomas (Cert 196)

In a graveyard survey of Langford Parish Church by the Maldon Archaeological Group dated Summer 1997 the following transcription is shown, confirming part of which I had obtained, "In memory of/Thomas Francis/of Stock hall Ulting/who died January 11th 1883/aged 70 years". This is obviously this mans gravestone and he is buried next to his first wife and son Thomas (See Photos L116 to L118).

General Notes: Child - Abraham FRANCIS

Apparantly he was born in Hatfield Peveral and baptised in Ulting in 1815. Doc 382, a newspaper cutting, shows him born at Stock Hall.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++
Born in March 1815 as obtained from his grave stone (Doc382).

Originally came to notice as result of being named as a beneficiary in his father's will written in 1848 and proved in 1849. Unlike his brothers (see below-he had emigrated) he was not given any options to buy his father's property and was treated exactly like his sisters in that he receives a one sixth share of the total legacy (£1500) on the subsequent death of his mother.

The following notes were supplied by Harriett Nolan (a direct descendent of Abraham's) in 1999 and amount to a good account of his life after he left the UK to live in Canada, contain Canadian census entries from 1852 to 1881 and his obituary in a local paper:-

At the age of 13 [1828] Abraham Francis apprenticed to a physician for 7 years;then attended lectures at Guys and St Thomas Hospitals where he received the Degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1837, from
the Royal Academy of Physicians and Surgeons, now the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
He left for Mosa Township,Middlesex Co.Ontario Canada [Canada West] in 1837. On the same ship S/S James was a family from Udimore, Sussex, England, named Baker. Their daughter Harriet ,17,and Abraham became great friends and upon arriving at their port of Entry, proceeded to Augusta, New York together. Abraham and Harriet agreed she would wait for his return to her after he had established Residency and Medical Practice in Mosa Township Middlesex Co.,Province of Ontario Canada. We believe from family journal's notes that he returned to England late 1840 and upon his return, married Harriet Bennett Baker on 10 June 1841 in Augusta Oneida Co.,NYS. No record of their marriage has been officially found, only an entry in the family Bible.

General Notes: Husband - William FAIRHEAD

Originally came to notice as result of marriage in 1796 at Little Totham (Doc310). He is shown a bachelor of this parish and signed the certificate himself. The marriage was by licence but no copy of the licence is held at ERO.

William died and was buried at Little Totham in December 1806 (No copy). His gravestone at All saints Parish Church, when seen on 2nd August 2000 reads as follows "Sacred// to// the memory of// William Fairhead// of Lt Renters of this parish// who died the 17th(?) of Decr (?) 1806// Aged 36(?) years" While faded is some parts the inscription, carved in capital letters is still reasonably clear (See Photo L113 & L115). His wife is buried with him and her inscription is shown on her page. His burial, according to the parish register, took place on the same day as his death if I have read it right on the gravestone i.e. 17th December 1806, but no age is shown in the register (ERO DP 78/1/2)(No copy).

Sacred to the memory of William Fairhead of Little Renters of this parish who died the 12th December 1806 aged 36 years also of Kitty Fairhead wife of the above who died the 29th December 1813 aged 41 years.

Doc 343 (FRC IR26/387F207) is a copy of a death duty record relating to William. He apparantly died intestate and the administration was sworn on the 12th May 1807 by his wife Kitty, shown as widow of the deceased. Both of Little Totham with an estate shown as under £1500. The date 8th March is written across the top of the entry, the significance of which I have no idea.

Will at ERO to be obtained.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++
Originally came to notice as a result of her baptism at Ulting in 1772 (No copy).

Is apparantly identical to a marriage at Little Totham, Essex in 1796 (Doc310). She is shown as a spinster of Heybridge and the witness signature of R. Francis looks very much like her father's. The marriage was by licence, but no copy of the licence held at ERO.

Doc 343 (FRC IR26/387F207) is a copy of a death duty record relating to Kitty's husband, William. He apparantly died intestate and the administration was sworn on the 12th May 1807 by Kitty, shown as widow of the deceased. Both of Little Totham with an estate shown as under £1500. The date 8th March is written across the top of the entry, which may be the date of his death.

Although not named in her father's will (Doc300) proved in 1810, a residue is left to be shared equally "for the benefit of the rest of my sons and daughters". If she has survived until this time, no doubt she received something.

Kitty is buried at All Saints Parish Church, Little Totham along with her husband, whose part of the inscription is shown on his page. Kitty's reads as follows "Also of// Kitty Fairhead// wife of the above// who died the 29th Dec 1813// Aged 41 years" and was clearly visible when seen in August 2000 (See photo L113 & L115). The inscription is carved in capital letters. The parish register shows that she was buried on the 9th January 1814, aged 41 years (ERO DP78/1/6F3)(No copy).
