My name is Stephen Wregg and my wife Caroline's mum -Lillian - was a daughter of Gladys and Lionel John (Jack) Chambers. She had a sister Gladys Joyce and brother Bill John Chambers + many other step brothers and sisters from her father's second marriage. Her name was Lillian May and she was born 4 Sept 1920 in Paddington, Sydney. She died just recently, 7 March 2001. Lil had spelt her mum's surname as Melain when I initally did some research on her side. I have yet to prove with birth /death certificates yet but all seems to match up. Lil's grandfather was Paddy. Gladys Caroline Alice May Melehan Chambers died 1931 (reg no 1418); Her parents were Patrick and Caroline, nth Sydney. My wife was an only child, Caroline Anne Alce, born 1 June 1948. From Harriet's notes he married an Anne Aldham in 1874, which I have yet to confirm. Born, according to various census, at Goldhanger.

Originally came to notice in the 1851 Census (Doc 239) as a 6 year old living with his parents.
In the 1861 Census (RG9/1108F4)(No copy) he is shown aged 15, with a middle name of James. He is living with his wdowed father and one sister.
In the 1871 Census (Doc405) he is shown aged 25, single, working with his father and brother at Stock Hall.
In the 1881 Census (RG11/1740F57)(No copy) he is shown aged 35 born Goldhanger, living with a wife Anne, two children and two servants. These are identical to details supplied to me by Harriett Nolan and I have no reason to doubt this is the correct person with the census.
Notes from Mick 20 July 2001 show that he committed suicide and his wife and children moved into Ulting Hall with her parents.
"WILLINGALE SPAIN
Death of a farmer - A painful excitement was created in this district on Saturday, when it became known that Mr. R.J.Francis, farmer, of Munsons Farm, had been found shot through the head in his bedroom. About a quarter to ten o'clock on Friday night Mr. Francis retired to his rooms. At about three o'clock on Saturday morning, he knocked at the door of the bedroom of his horsekeeper, who sleeps in the house, and told him to get up and look out of the window, as it thundered and the lightning was very sharp. Mr. Francis then returned to his room, but about four o'clock he called his horsekeeper to go to work telling him he would write a cheque for him to pay the men, as he intended to go home. He also said he wanted the horsekeeper's wife to get his breakfast ready and to tell the boy to have the pony and trap ready for him. At half-past five Mr. Francis was seen looking out of his bedroom window and giving the men directions as to their work. About half-past seven, Mrs Bush, the horse-keeper's wife, went to Mr. Francis' bedroom door to call him, but being unable to make anyone hear she opened the door and saw him lying on the floor dead with his gun on the left hand side of him. She raised an alarm and called a neighbour. Mrs. Francis and her three little children were not at home at the time having gone on a visit to some friends on the previous Sunday. Great sympathy is expressed with the bereaved wife and children".
