Dear Laurence,
I have completed my search for the records of your ancestor, Frederick Edmonds, whom you believed to be a Corporal with the Scots Fusilier Guards at the time of his marriage in 1869. There is not actually a regiment known as the Scots Fusilier Guards, but there are the Scots Guards and the Royal Scottish Fusiliers, so I commenced my search by checking the discharge papers for both of these regiments as follows:
WO 97/1378, Scots Guards, 1855-1872
WO 97/1861, Foot Guards, 1873-1882
WO 97/1461, Royal Scots Fusiliers, 1855-1872
WO 97/1948, Infantry, 1873-1882
The records for the period 1873-1882 are divided into Foot Guards and Infantry as opposed to specific regiments. There were no papers for Frederick in any of these sets of documents.
I then searched the muster rolls of the Royal Scots Fusiliers (also known as the 21st of Foot) for the period 1869-1870. The musters of the 1st battalion were held in WO 12/3838, and those of the 2nd battalion were in WO 12/3863. Frederick did not appear in any of these musters.
I then searched the musters of the Scots Guards for the same period, held in WO 12/1872, and Frederick was present throughout the set of musters, which covered April 1869 to March 1870. The battalion was based At Home. Frederick was Private No 1683 until 21st October 1869, when he was promoted to Corporal vice (in place of) Trump. Frederick did not appear on the Married Roll of the musters. This does not mean that he was not married, but it means that his wife was not accompanying him in the barracks.
I then traced the musters backwards and found that Frederick enlisted on 29th December 1865. The voucher number next to his name was 7, which denotes that he was recruited in the Gloucester area. This information was held in WO 12/1868.
I then jumped forwards to find when Frederick discharged. I searched the musters of 1875-1876, held in WO 12/1878, but Frederick was no longer listed at this time. I then searched backwards and found that he discharged by purchase, whilst still a Corporal, on 5th June 1871. He was stationed in London at the time and paid £18 in order to discharge. He had served for a period of 5 years and 5 months.
I then searched the relevant Non-Effectives page, which was held together with the above muster in WO 12/1874, and this showed that he was born in Worcester and that his trade upon enlistment was that of a gilder. Frederick did not appear on any of the Married Rolls contained within the musters. I also noted in the muster of 1870-1871, held in WP 12/1873, that he was on furlough (vacation) from 17th to 25th January 1871. The battalion was stationed in London and Dublin during this muster.
Finally, I searched the Regimental and Chaplains Returns of Births and Marriages, but there were no relevant listings for the time of Fredericks service. I checked under both Edmonds and Edmunds, although Frederick only in fact appears under the former spelling throughout the musters.

I do have one Frederick Edmonds on my file. He joined the Kent County Constabulary on 18/11/1872 and resigned on 20/4/1874. No reason is given in our skeletal records. His collar number was 156, he was a single man on application to the force, and they are the only details I can furnish you with, as the book that contains all the personal details of officers from 1857 to 1874 is missing.(see the home page of our website).

In 1871, Frank was already in Newcastle as a Sorting Office Clerk. By 1881 he had got to Elswick nearby.
In 1861, we find Helen at 81 High Street Marylebone, as a Widow, aged 30, living with: 3 year old Arthur Clara Marshall, a servant, from Paddington and George Deane, a bus conductor from Croydon. So no clues.

Beatrice May Mann remembers going to see the funeral and being ticked off for waving at the coffin.
All I know about Walter Philip Edmonds (WPE). He had already died in 1938 when my parents married as he is marked as deceased on their marriage cert. He was alive in 1932; my father finished his seven year bookbinding apprenticeship in 1930 and couldn't find a job because of the depression. He was unemployed for 18 months and eventually went to work at the same place as his father (WPE) which means WPE was still working in 1932.
I have a photograph of WPE and Margaret Edmonds/Vines taken in their garden (date unknown) and they are with another lady unknown to me. This lady also appears in another photograph surrounded by 4 men who are obviously related to each other. She is holding the arm or two of them but it is unclear whether they are her sons or younger brothers. Someone has written the names of the men on the border of the photograph - Keith, Jack, Phil and Will - any ideas?
On WPE and Margaret Vines marriage cert (Sept 1906) the two witnesses are George Arthur Vines and Ada Minnie Vines - she is a new name to me, do you know where she fits? Also on the marriage certificate Frederick Crompton Edmonds is shown as a soldier and still alive - at least he is not marked as deceased. Not sure if that helps or hinders you
Further background information - Margaret Vines, at the time of her marriage to her first husband (Dec 1890) was living at 40 Holyoake Road and her new husband at 110 Brook Street - presumably both in the Kennington, London area. Father-in-law Thomas Gosheron was already deceased.
My father was quite a forceful character and did not discuss his family ever within my hearing, which is why I thought there wasn't any! Eddie Edmonds (married to Joan, who you call Aunt Joan) was my godfather so I knew we were related.
