CHAPMAN Origin of name: from Saxon ceapan or cypan, to buy or sell; Saxon ceap - a bargain, a price, a trader, a shopman. Flemish- a merchant.
According to undated notes by Vern Hall: Stephen Chapman's grandfather "Thomas Chapman [-968 in this ancestry file-ed.] made his will 10 Mar 1569. He was a farmer who named everything from kettles and pots to parcels of land all over the town [of Folkestone]. He did this for our cause, 'I will that Thomas [-969 in this ancestry file-ed.] and John [-967] my sonnes shall have my pte of the barne and place with all appurtenances w'ch I purchased from William Godden and Adryan Godden, sett, lying and being in Cowstreet in Folkestone.' This must have been the beginning of our Chapman family in Folkestone." Now referred to as Kow Street. Steven CHAPMAN who married Margaret ELGAR is my 8xGreat Grandfather on my mothers side of the family. I am in the process of researching that side of the family at the moment and have only just come across the CHAPMAN's the other day, as I said, what a small world.
Steven and Margaret had 10 children in total, my line starts with their daughter Mary (b1644) who married Robert BAKER (b Abt 1642), they married in Folkestone Kent on the 11 June 1667. Re ELGAR, - my maternal great-grandmother was Sarah ELGAR, born abt 1851, possibly at Tilmanstone, Kent? and died abt 1930. Sarah married Stephen FOAD, 23 December 1876 and they had 7 children one of whom Stephen Herbert FOAD was my maternal grandfather. Unfortunately I very little about Sarah's parents, not even their names, except that her father was supposed to have died when she was a child. Sarah's mother was b. circa 1809-10 at Tilmanstone Kent, d. 1914, 4 days after Stephen FOAD, Sarahs spouse, when she was 104! I know of no bro's or sis's. Does this tie up with any other data? There is a problem here. The John Chapman married to Sussanah Mullett is listed as a son of these parents. Indeed, they have four known John Chapman sons. The issue involves which John. Normally, a parent reused the name because a previous child with that same name died in childhood. So the last named John Chapman should be the surviving child and hense the spouse. The problem is that John Chapman #4 was born in 1660, making him only about l2 years old at the time our John and Sussanah married in 1672--not the likely candidate. It is possible there was a different middle name given and not all the previous John sons died, but we do not know which is our John for purpose of his marriage. So I have compromised, left his last name in CAPITAL letters and put his birth date as Abt. 1650. We need to do more research to determine the correct fit and then perform a data merge.

This John Chapman in turn had a son also named John Chapman, born circa 1685 in England, who married Sarah Brown on 16 Feb 1710 in Stonington, Connecticut. "Tradition has it that he was forced into the British Navy, by a press-gang, and when the ship visited Boston, MA, he availed himself of the opportunity to assume the liberty of which he had been deprived. He fled and found succor in the abode of Samuel Allen, in what is now called Wakefield, Rhode Island. He was a weaver, having become proficient therein by several years service. He came to Stonington, now North Stonington, where he worked at his trade the remainder of his life. (History of Stonington, Wheeler)"

There are various children I have identified Richard William 1894 had Kenneth Punnett born 1923 and David F. born 1925. Both are still alive and living in Folkestone. Both have at least one daughter each as I have been in touch with them.
Henry and Tomosiona had Henry Francis born 17 Oct 1899 and Thomasina Willis born 1901. She married a Stokes in 1926
John and Elizabeth had John born 1903. Louisa Emma born 1906 married to a Humphrey in 1928. Elizabeth Emily born 1900, married to a Bartter in 1921. John and unknown Weakley had June L. in 1933
Dear Richard I have view your family tree online. The information on the Punnett family from the Folkestone area of Kent came to me from John Punnett aged 98, last month. He is the son of John Punnett, born 1878. How I came by it is a long story, I was a Punnett before I married. I am hoping that John will send me the missing page of names and dates to see how my family fits in with his. It was researched by a relation of his in 1973 and sent to me on the origional typed sheets. The info comes from the Folkestone Parish records up to 1837, held by the Geneological Society in London. CHAPMAN Origin of name: from Saxon ceapan or cypan, to buy or sell; Saxon ceap - a bargain, a price, a trader, a shopman. Flemish- a merchant.
According to undated notes by Vern Hall: Thomas Chapman's grandfather also named "Thomas Chapman [-968 in this ancestry file-ed.] made his will 10 Mar 1569. He was a farmer who named everything from kettles and pots to parcels of land all over the town [of Folkestone]. He did this for our cause, 'I will that Thomas [-969 in this ancestry file-ed.] and John [-967] my sonnes shall have my pte of the barne and place with all appurtenances w'ch I purchased from William Godden and Adryan Godden, sett, lying and being in Cowstreet in Folkestone.' This must have been the beginning of our Chapman family in Folkestone." Now referred to as Kow Street.
