Robert is shown in the 1851 Census (Ref HO107/1778 Folio 695)(Doc 29) aged 2 living with parents and some sisters.
Robert does NOT appear in the 1861 Census (Doc 27) with his parents.
He again appears in the 1871 Census (Doc 26) at St Clares Hall with his parents and two sisters aged 22 and unmarried.
In the 1881 Census (Doc307) Robert is aged 32, still living with parents and two sisters and is unmarried.
Is probalbly the Robert A Francis who signs as a witness at his brother Abraham's marriage in 1884 (Cert 190).
According to his fathers death certificate (Number 43) in 1885 Robert was present at the death and presumed still living there
In his fathers will (Doc 32 probated 1885) Robert is offered the premises of St Clares (Cleres) Hall to buy at current market value, which as he was next seen as a working man, I assume he declined or could not afford it. He was also left a sum of money like all the other children.
Shamefully, in 1889, Robert was apparantly "obliged" to marry (Cert 23) Clara (he being aged 40 and she 22 would I complain) with Nan arriving some two months after the wedding.Marriage certificate shows witnesses E. J. Francis and W. F.Francis, who I would hazard a guess are his brother William fairhead and his wife Eleen Jane nee Ccaton but there is no certainty. One of three Francis brothers who married three Caton sisters.
By the 1891 Census (Ref RG12/1365 Folio 37) (Doc 28) he was living with his wife Clara, Nan aged 1 and son aged 5 months at Hill Farm, Willingale Doe.
In his mother's will (Doc160), made in 1885 and probated in 1892, he is shown as an executor and receives ten guineas plus a tenth part of the residue.
Is named in his father-in-laws will (Doc124) in 1901, but all bequests are to his wife for her own use.
On his wifes death certificate in 1902 (Cert 93) is shown as a farmer at Charley Farm, Shellow Bowells, Essex. He was granted Administration of her estate (Somerset House Index) and inherited effects valued at £587 15sd 4d.
Albert died in 1922 (Cert126). There is no trace of any will at Somerset House.

General Notes: Wife - Clara Lydia Ann CATON
Great Granny Clara was born at Willingale in 1866 (Cert 27).
She is next shown on the 1871 Census (Doc 6) as a four year old living with her parents.
In the 1881 Census (RG11/1369F89)(Doc314) Clara is shown aged 14 living as a student (assumed boarding school) at Barnet College, Hertsfordshire.
Signs as a witness at the marriage of her sister Alice Mary in 1884 (Cert 190).
It would appear that Clara was "obliged" to marry in 1889 with Nan being born some 2 months later (Certs 43 and 3). The marriage took place at Maldon Registry Office and was by licence (no copy). Clara is one of three caton sisters who married three Francis brothers.
Clara next appears in the 1891 Census (Doc 28) with her husband, Nan aged 1 and baby son.
In her father's will (Doc124) in 1901 she is left personal property, the remains of the lease on her home(Charley Farm) and a share of the trust fund, which in view of her own death the following year should have gone to her children, when they married. I wonder if Nan got any?
Clara is buried in Willingale Doe Parish Church (see photo L1). Her large headstone at the side is beginning to erode but in April 1996 the following was visible:-
Clara The wife of Robert A Francis Daughter of W O Caton
Esq. Died Feby 1st 1902 Aged 35 (See photo 5)
The Index at Somerset House shows as follows "Francis, Clara Lydia Ann of Charley-farm, Shellow Bowells, Ongar, Essex (wife of Robert Alfred Francis) died 1 February 1902 Administration London 11 March to the said Robert Alfred Francis, farmer. Effects £587 15s 4d".

Nan is shown in the 1891 Census (Doc 28) aged 1, with her parents and baby brother.
Nan married at Shellow Bowells Parish Church, Essex in 1906. This church is now a private house, the parish having amalgamated with Willingale Doe (Photo L5 of church taken 1998)
According to her daughter (Doris) Nan had another child in about 1924/5, but it was stillborn. Mum remembers that there was a funeral, however until three years later there was no requirement to register births or deaths of still born children, so the only document obtained would have been authority to bury.
Just to make sure I searched civil records for about this time but there was no trace. Somewhere of course there is a burial record.
Photo L10 is of Nan taken C1970.
Photo L60 is of Nan taken 1965, location unknown, but believed the poodle is "Dinky" owned by her son-in-law, Fred Smith.
Nan was cremated and is interred, along with Grand-dad, in Chingford Mount Cemetary, Chingford, London, E4. The inscription was clearly visible (Photo L6) in September 1996.

Additional Information: Husband of Jessie Francis, of Barrington's Farm, Orsett, Essex.
Commemorative Information
Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France
Grave Reference/
Panel Number: Pier and Face 10 D
Location: The Thiepval Memorial will be found on the D73, off the main Bapaume to Albert road (D929).
Historical Information: On 1 July 1916, supported by a French attack to the south, thirteen divisions of Commonwealth forces launched an offensive on a line from north of Gommecourt to Maricourt. Despite a preliminary bombardment lasting seven days, the German defences were barely touched and the attack met unexpectedly fierce resistance. Losses were catastrophic and with only minimal advances on the southern flank, the initial attack was a failure. In the following weeks, huge resources of manpower and equipment were deployed in an attempt to exploit the modest successes of the first day. However, the German Army resisted tenaciously and repeated attacks and counter attacks meant a major battle for every village, copse and farmhouse gained. At the end of September, Thiepval was finally captured. The village had been an original objective of 1 July. Attacks north and east continued throughout October and into November in increasingly difficult weather conditions. The Battle of the Somme finally ended on 18 November with the onset of winter. In the spring of 1917, the German forces fell back to their newly prepared defences, the Hindenburg Line, and there were no further significant engagements in the Somme sector until the Germans mounted their major offensive in March 1918. The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916. The memorial also serves as an Anglo-French Battle Memorial in recognition of the joint nature of the 1916 offensive and a small cemetery containing equal numbers of Commonwealth and French graves lies at the foot of the memorial. The memorial, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, was built between 1928 and 1932 and unveiled by the Prince of Wales, in the presence of the President of France, on 31 July 1932. The dead of other Commonwealth countries who died on the Somme and have no known graves are commemorated on national memorials elsewhere.
General Notes: Child - Henry Clarence FRANCIS
A C. H. Francis is shown present at death of his father in 1922 (Cert126) and I am assuming this is Clarence. If it proves in the future not to be then I must question if I have the correct death certificate for the father, although everything (ages, occupation etc) checks out.

General Notes: Husband - William Fairhead FRANCIS
First and only appearance with family is in 1861 Census (Doc 27) as aged 18 and living with his parents.
Wiliam married in 1874 at Willingale Doe (Cert 191). He is shown as a bachelor of full age. He was able to sign the register himself and the witnesses are probably his father and brother Robert, although the latter is shown as Robert J. Is one of three Francis brothers who married three Caton sisters.
Appears identical with the 1881 Census (RG11/1778F80)(No copy) shown as William F Francis, aged 38 (perfect fit) living with his wife and three children, their names being identical to the information supplied to me by Harriett Nolan.
In his fathers will (Doc 32 probated 1885) William is shown as an executor and is also left a sum of money.
In his mother's will (Doc160), made in 1885 and probated in 1892, receives a tenth part of the legacy.
A W.Francis is shown as witness on the wedding certificate of this mans brother Robert (Cert 23) in 1889. Although no certainty it was William I have no other possibilities at this time.
Originally came to notice where he is named in Father-in-laws will of 1901(Doc124) although receives no legacy.
Grave noted in records in Goldhanger church died Jan 17th 1922 aged 79 years, buried with Constance Marie Francis died Nov 5th 1927 and Ellen Jane died June 25th 1928 aged 75 years.
General Notes: Wife - Ellen Jane CATON
Ellen first appears as an 18 year old in the 1871 Census (Doc 6). Strangely she did NOT feature in the 1861 Census as an 8 year old.
Ellen married in 1874 (Cert 191). She is shown as a spinster of full age and was able to sign the register herself. One of the witnesses was her father. One of three Caton sisters who married three Francis brothers.
In the 1881 Census (RG11/1778F80)(No copy) she is shown aged 28, born Willingale Doe, living with her husband and three children. It was this entry which made me aware that she was the husband was William Fairhead Francis, son of Robert and Ann, causing me to merge two seperate records.
In her fathers will in 1901 (Doc 124) her husband is named and she receives a share of the trust fund set up by the will.
Buried at Goldhanger with husband and Constance Marie Francis aged 75 years.

General Notes: Husband - William Oliver CATON
On his grave marker at Willingale is mention a William, which I at first thought was his son, Willie. I now know that Willie is buried at Aythorpe Roding, so who is this William. To look at next time at Willingale.
========================================================================== ===========
There is a query on his date of birth. I first read it a November 1816, but this does not tie in with his parents marriage. I then changed my mind for it to be November 1820, but this clashes with his brother's baptism in March 1821. Maybe some subterfuge was arranged to cover up a pre- marriage concieved child (Doc40). Whichever the case there is no doubt that the correct children are with the correct parents.
In the 1841 Census (Ref HO107/328/16) (Doc 16) a William Caton is shown at the Farm of Friars, Aythorpe Roothing. I would like to think that, shown as 20 years of age (a bit old), this could be the same man and where he met his future wife who lived there, but feel that this is unlikely because a 20 year old William also appears on the Blackmore Census (Ref HO107/325/4 Folio 18)(Doc 24) which shows him living with his parents and must take that as the correct entry for this record.
The 1851 Census (Ref HO107/1771/196/1 Folio 64) (Doc 9) shows William living at Diggins Farm (Photo L4) with only one other person (a cowman) shown. The census was taken in March 1851 and he did not marry until May.
The 1861 Census (RG9/1066F42)(Doc128) shows him living with his wife Mary and children William and Alice plus a servant and a groom.
Is left certain property in his father in laws will (Doc106)
The 1871 Census (Ref RG10/1642/187/1 Folio 46/7) (Doc 6) shows him living with his wife and children Ellen,William,Julia and Clara (plus one visitor, two servants and a groom) farming 600 acres and employing 41 persons.
In the 1873 Return of Owners of Land, W. O. Caton of Beauchamp Roding is shown as the owner of 241 acres.
William signed as witness at the wedding of his daughter Ellen Jane (Cert 191) in March 1874.
In his fathers will (Doc 65) proved 17th August 1874) William shares everything (apart from a small legacy to a niece/housekeeper) with his brother Abraham.
The 1881 Census (Ref RG11/1740/188/1 Folio 47) (Doc 10) shows William and his wife living with his son Willie D and daughters Alice M. & Julia M.but there is no record of children under 16 years of age including my direct decendent Clara Lydia Ann. Also present in the household are 2 female servants although the farm is now down to 373 acres, it still manages to employ 25 persons.
In 1884 signed as witness at the marriage of his daughter Alice Mary (Cert 190).
In the 1891 Census (no copy) only his wife and daughter Julia still reside plus one servant.
William is shown as 'present at death' of his wife Mary Ann in 1898 (Cert128).
In his wife's will (Doc102) proved in 1899 he is left certain lands and property.
William died in 1901 (Cert100) and is buried, along with his wife at Willingale Doe Parish Church (Photo L3). Their headstone is still in the churchyard but the inscription is now badly worn and apart from a partial date and names is nearly unreadable. (Photo L2). Grave visited April 1996.
William's will (Doc 124) was proved at London on the 5th June 1901 by his son Willliam Draper Caton, his executors being that son plus his daughter Julia and cousin Henry Oliver. Apart from some household effects to his daughters Clara and Julia, the estate is to be sold and shared anong his five living children. Effects £7968-2s-9d.

General Notes: Wife - Mary Ann DRAPER
Although census returns give her date of birth as about 1829, the Baptism of Mary Ann took place in 1826 (Doc122).
In the 1841 Census (Doc 15) she is NOT shown living with her parents, but was by now 14/15 years of age and probably working away from home. No other children shown.
The 1851 Census records for Aythorpe Roothing are missing at PRO.
Shown appears on wedding certificate (Cert 34).
She is shown on 1861 Census (No copy) as living with husband William and children William and Alice.
In her father's will (Doc106) she is left (along with her husband) all his property. This leads me to believe that her elder brother had died young.
In the 1871 Census (Doc 6) she now has 4 children, Ellen, William, Julia and Clara.
The 1881 Census (Doc 10) shows her living with husband and William, Alice and Julia.
By 1891 only Mary, her husband and Julia appear in the Census (no copy).
Mary Ann died 24th July 1898 (Cert128) and is buried, along with her husband at Willingale Doe Parish Church (Photo L3). The names, but not much else, is just about readable on the headstone in September 1996 (Photo L2).
In her will, proved at London on the 13th February 1899, Her husband William Oliver, son William Draper, farmers, her daughter Julia Dixon, spinster and a Henry Oliver, farmer are named as executors. Effects £3796-16s. She leaves property to her husband and son, Willie, and securities etc to her daughters and their offspring, which regretfully are not named.
Notes: Marriage
------ From Source Attached To: Marriage ------
Confirmed by marriage certificate (number 34). Married at the Parish Church, Aythorpe Roding, Essex.

General Notes: Child - Ellen Jane CATON
General Notes: Child - Alice Mary CATON
Alice first appears on the 1861 Census (no copy) as a 4 year old.
Alice is NOT shown with the family in the 1871 Census (Doc 6). Where was she?
In the 1881 Census (Doc 10) she is shown living at Diggins Farm aged 21 (probably 25) and unmarried.
Alice married in 1884 (Cert 190) at Willingale Doe Parish Church. She is shown a spinster aged 27 (she was only 24) and signed the certificate herself. The witnesses are, among others, her father and her sisters Julia and Clara. She was one of three Caton sisters who married three Francis brothers.
In the 1891 Census (Doc 308) she is shown aged 32, living with her husband and one child.
In her father's will (Doc124) in 1901 she receives a share of the trust fund set up by the will.

General Notes: Child - Clara Lydia Ann CATON
