Thomas Bridle White was a friend of a local smuggler called Mutter. Thom as used to put a cider outside Passaford farm as a sign to the customs m en "to come in for a drink by the warm fire". It was also a sign to Mutt er that the customs men were "Otherwise engaged for the evening". 12

Thomas Carter White moved his family from Otterton to Hemyock a distan ce of some 25 miles in 1909.
My Grandfather Thomas Arthur Ham White (Thomas Carter White's eldest so n) told me the story of the move when i was a child.
He told me that he (aged 10) and his father walked the farm animals from t heir old home, Houstern Farm Otterton to their new home, Culmpyne Bart on at Hemyock.
His mother and younger sister Marjorie both drove horses and carts with th eir furniture, clothes and the younger children on the back. He said "we l eft at first light and didn't get there until it was nearly dark. I can re member that my legs were aching and i was so tired. You kiddies couldn't w alk that far now, you complain when you have to walk half a mile to scho ol !!".

Originally came to notice as a result of information supplied by Harriett Nolan viz page 667 of the Publication of the Harlean Society Volume 14 of 1879, Visitations of Essex Part 2 which shows an entry whereby a Reverend Carwardine marries a Sarah , dau of ........... Francis of Heybridge Hall, co. Essex in 1812. I am certain that this is Charles' marriage for resons shown on his wifes notes page. The marriage took place, by licence, at Tolleshunt Knights in February 1812, where Charles is shown as a bachelor of this parish (ERO DP 329/1/4). The Harlean document, which shows a pedigree of Charles, particularly his mother's line, and the parish register are together as Doc 372.
Found in the Crockfords Clerical Register of 1856 Charles is shown as rector of Tolleshunt Knights., the 1851 census found them both living at the Rectory in Tolleshunt Knights,. There is a will PROB11/2252 made on 7th Sept 1846 and proved on 5th June 1857.He names Sarah and returns to her £600 which was her property and muxed up in his estates, this sum probably being her share of her father's legacy. He leaves her a further £100 plus interst gained from and investment of £3000 for her lifetime. It names his 2 sons and a brother Henry Holgate Carwardine.
General Notes: Wife - Sarah FRANCIS
Appears identical with baptism in June 1792 (same date as her brother Thomas) in Heybridge, the register showing a birth date of April 1790 (No copy).
Originally came to notice as a result of being left a legacy of £500 in her fathers will proved in 1810 (Doc300) when she shall attain the age of 21and with some restrictions. She is also named in the Death Duty Register (Doc294).
As a result of information supplied by Harriett Nolan page 667 of the Publication of the Harlean Society Volume 14 of 1879, Visitations of Essex Part 2 shows an entry whereby a Reverend Carwardine marries a Sarah , dau of ........... Francis of Heybridge Hall, co. Essex in 1812. Although her father Robert had died in 1809 he left the Hall estate for the benefit of all his children until the lease expired and I therefore believe this marriage to be hers. The marriage took place at Tollehunt Knights in February 1812 (ERO DP 329/1/4) and shows Sarah as a spinster of Heybridge. One of the witnesses was a Thos Francis, who I would think is her younger brother. Sarah was able to sign the register herself. All prints outs together on Doc 372. Although the marriage was by licence, there is no copy of such licence at ERO and, being clergy, her husband may have gone elsewhere.
