THE ASSIZES
NORTH-EASTERN CIRCUIT
At York, last week, before Mr. Justice Grantham, FRANCIS JAMES SINCLAIR RYELAND, 26, soldier, pleaded "Guilty" to stealing £50, the property of her Majesty, at Throxenby Barracks, near Scarborough, on May 29. Mr. Luck prosecuted; the prisoner was not represented by counsel. It seems that Ryeland was a sergeant on the permanent staff of the Yorkshire Artillery Militia, who were on May 29 last stationed at Throxenby Barracks. On that day he received £50 for the purpose of paying some canteen and other bills. Instead of using the money for the purpose for which it was intended, he absconded with it to America, leaving his wife and three children behind him. Captain Burt, the adjutant of the regiment, stated that the prisoner had borne a good character and that a considerable sum of money had previously passed through his hands. His pay-sheet was no quite right, and perhaps the fear of getting into trouble for this reason induced him to go away. The prisoner said he was very sorry for what he had done, and that drink and gambling had brought him into trouble. The learned Judge said that the moral crime of leaving his wife and children was as bad as taking the money, and sentenced the prisoner to six months' imprisonment with hard labour.
