The Times. Saturday, May 29th 1880 Pg 14 -issue 29824; column B

At Clerkenwell, James Sweetland, a baker, was Category; Law

At Clerkenwell, James Sweetland, a baker, was brought up on remand charged with the wilful murder of Samuel Warr Buckler, by shooting him, on the morning of Saturday last. Mr Layton, solicitor, said he appeared on behalf of the relatives of the deceased for the prosecution, which was however, conducted by Police Inspector Goodwyn, Y division. Mr Ricketts, solicitor, defended. The facts of the case appeared in The Times of Monday last but then the man Buckler was not dead and the prisoner was only charged with attempted murder. Both men were tradesmen, carrying on businesses in Junction Road, Holloway, close to the Archway Tavern, the prisoner as a baker and Buckler as a cheesemonger and bacon dealer. The murder was committed on Saturday morning last, the prisoner shooting from his own shop at the deceased, who was then standing in front of his business premises. The evidence of Nathan Lock and George Atkins to this effect was taken at the previous hearing and fully reported.. An inquest was held on Thursday, at which a verdict of wilful murder was returned against the prisoner. The further evidence now given was the same as that offered at the inquest and which has already appeared in The Times. The cross-examination showed one new point-that the prisoner had on the morning of the murder had sent one of his men for gin on three separate occasions, that he had consumed that and some that was in the house, and that afterwards he seemed drunk and "wild". It also stated that some months ago the prisoner was thrown from his trap and received injuries to his head. It was shown that he had purchased a quantity of small shot on the morning in question; but previous evidence had proved the gun was loaded with a cartridge, so that the shot so bought had not been employed in the act. Mr Ricketts regretted that the wife of the deceased man had not been directed to attend the court. He wished to put some questions to her and he thought she should have been brought. The magistrate considered that it would be desirable to have her evidence, and the prisoner was further remanded for a week for Mrs Buckler's attendance.

* I presume James was found Guilty as in the 1881 and 1891 census he is an inmate at HM Prison, Gillingham Kent. 91
