Transcript of will of Betty Purnell of Hallatrow, within the parish of Hi gh Littleton, Somerset
Proved 18th January 1851 at PCC (ref PROB 11/2126 q60 f80)

This is the last will and testament of me, Betty Purnell of Hallatrow with in the parish of High Littleton in the county of Somerset, spinster. Wher eas I am entitled to the mines veins and seams of coal ore, minerals and m etals in and under all the piece of meadow or pasture ground variously cal led or known by the name of Rowdens Grip containing by estimation four acr es and a half (more or less) situate lying and being in the parish of Paul ton in the said county of Somerset * * said piece of ground was sometime s ince known * to Rowdens’s Grip and middle Close was also sometime since k nown open to a close of ground called Withey Mills and which said three pi eces of land now form one close and is called Hartrets; ten acres and t he same belongs to William Coxeter James esquire, and which said pie ce of ground called Rowden’s Grip is bound on the east by a piece of mead ow or pastures ground heretofore belong to John Watts, but now to David No okes(?) on the west by two pieces of meadow or pasture ground once heretof ore belong to Stephen Plummer also call Rowden’s Grip * * heretofore belo ng to Samuel Tuber but * now belonging to John Hill esquire and * on the s outh by the highway leading from Bath to Wells and on the north by the sa id piece of land heretofore called Riddle Close and which said mines we re worked by my later father and mother Robert Purnell and Betty Purnell w ere * exchanged the said piece of land called Rowdens Grip with John Jame s, Joseph Hill, and Diana Rolpease(?) in or about the year one thousand se ven hundred and fifty nine for a * of meadow or pasture land called the Gr ove otherwise Withy Mills (formerly in * * and then called the Chatwell t he Grove and Rudgway) now the property and being intermixed with other lan ds now or late of the Reverend James Ramball Row * so hereby give and devi se unto my nephew Robert Purnell (late of the City of Bristol) all and sin gular the said mines, veins, seams and strata of coal ore minerals and * t ogether will all such liberties right to privileges, powers and advantag es of cut__ing into and upon the __fare if the same pranises (?) or any pa rt thereof to mine big * for hand and * away the same as shall or m ay be * and necessary * reasonable satisfaction for the dame done here to or nearby * the same with the appertenaures until and to the use of t he said Robert Purnell, his heirs and assigns for ever. I give and bequea th my gold watch with the equipage and appendages belonging to it to my ni ece Mr Betty Skey Cox. I give and bequeath the best of my diamond rin gs to my relative Mrs Mary Ann Spry. I give and bequeath to other of my d iamond rings to her sister Mrs Frances Skey Scobell. I give and bequea th the best of my pearl broaches to my relative Mrs Hest Scobell. I gi ve and bequeath the other of my pearl broaches to her sister Miss Sarah Sa vage. I give and bequeath all the rest of my jewels, trinkets and person al ornaments unto my four nieces Mrs Sarah Coventry, Mrs Martha Green, t he said Betty Skey Cox, and Mrs Sarah Breach to be equally divided betwe en and amongst them by my executor * the appointed. I give and bequea th my sixteen foreign china plates to my relative Mrs Jane Scobell. I gi ve and bequeath all my household goods and furniture, my books and a ll my plate to my said nephew Robert Purnell. I give and bequeath a ll my clothes and linen of every description unto my before named four nie ces Mrs Sarah Coventry, Mrs Martha Green, Mrs Betty Skey Cox and Mrs Sar ah Breach to be equally divided between and amongst them by my said Execut or. I give and bequeath a legacy of one hundred pounds to my niece the sa id Sarah Coventry. All the rest residue and remainder of my real and pers onal estate and effects not hereinto fore before mentioned legacy all my j ust debts my funeral expenses and the cost and charges of proving th is my will I give devised and bequeath the same and every part and parc el thereof with the appertenments to the belonging unto my said nephew Rob ert Purnell Trustee and sole executor of this my will and hereby revoke a ll former and * wills by me at any time heretofore made and do declare th is only to be and maintain my last will and testament contained on two she ets of paper set my hand and seal that is to say my * to the preceding * a nd my hand and seal to the * and last sheet this eighteenth day of Novemb er one thousand eight hundred and forty five Betty Purnell. This is a codicil to the last will and testament of Betty Purnell of Halla trow within the parish of High Littleton in the county of Somerset spinst er whereas by my written will I gave and bequeathed a quarter share of cer tain my clothes and linen and a legacy of one hundred pounds to my niece t he certain named Mrs Sarah Coventry was to be now deceased * to hereby fi ve and bequeath the share of my jewels, trinkets and personal ornaments cl othes and linen and legacy intended for the said Sarah Coventry in a nd by my certain will unto all and every the children of the said Sarah Co ventry that shall be living at the time of my decease in equal shares a nd proportions and * my niece was within name Sarah Breach is now also dec eased now I do hereby give and bequeath the share of my jewels, trinke ts and personal ornaments and all my clothes and linen that I intended f or the said Sarah Breach in my written will unto all and every the childr en of the said Sarah Breach that shall be living at the time of my decea se in equal shares and proportions and in all * report certify and confi rm my written will in witness * I have here unto set my hand this thirteen th day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and for ty eight.
