"When I was 7 years old my father died and I went to live with my grandparents who lived in a town 100 miles away from Toronto. During the school summer holidays I would move back to my home in Toronto to be with my mother, brothers and sister.

While living with my grandparents I formed a regular pattern of attending Church and Sunday School and sang in the Choir.

While I was 12 years old I moved back to Toronto to live permanently and then reversed the former procedure by spending the summer school holidays with my grandparents. At that time I stopped attending Sunday School but did attend Church. The services seemed to have little meaning. At 16 I was confirmed by again although it was a moving experience I feel there was something lacking.

I as invited to attend the young peoples meetings at that Church which I did. This was where I met my wife to be.

I heard the gospel preached in Church regularly but I did not respond and resisted the invitations to attempt the Lord Jesus as my Saviour.

At the Church and young peoples we had a succession of Curate assistants. Finally a C.A. by he name of Maurice Murphy arrived and dramatic changes began to be made. As I look back I see how the Holy Sprit was at work in my life and before very long through the ministry of Maurice Murphy I was no longer resisting the Holy Sprit and the gospel messages and gave my life to the Lord Jesus. My wife to be, Betty, was also converted at this time.

During the years which followed the hand of God guided me along the path of my life and Bible study and prayer became important parts of my daily life.

I had 4 years of service in World War 2 where I was protected by the hand of God.

Returning from the war years in Europe Betty and I were married in 1946 and were blessed with 2 children - a boy and a girl both of whom committed their lives to Christ.

In 1960 I lost my job as the firm I was working with went out of business as they were no longer operating at a profit. After much prayer God directed me to start my own business which I am still doing.

In 1976 our son was killed in a car accident. Our faith in God was such we accepted this as part of His plan. At this time we felt the power of prayer as our friends upheld us before God.

The Christian life of course just goes on and on and each day there is a new opportunity to serve God. Each one of us is given certian talents and capabilities and we should be ready to be used by Him as opportunities arise. With our lives yielded to Him and praying for guidance day by day He will direct our paths."

Would like to switch to gun detachment duties if he shows up sufficiently well in training. Might be a good candidate for Jr. N.C.O. course. Pulhems profile is sutable for full operational duties.

Future Plans - Is returning to former employment.

Basis for counsellor's recommendations:

Polley impresses as a quiet, clean-cut, efficient young man who has a clear-cut post discharge plan. Having worked for 11 years in the Advertising Department at Goldsmith's Co. of Canada where he rose to the position of Asst. Manager, Polley has his re-employment with that firm arranged. For the past 5 months he has been on Industrial Leave, during which time he was promoted to Manager of the Advertising Dept. Polley appears keenly interested in his job and feels that it is permanent employment. Considering the circumstances of his case, it is felt that Polley's plan is feasible and that he should have no undude problem in rehabilitation.

Beloved husband of Betty for 60 years, loving father of Lynn and the late Donald. Cherished grandfather of Timothy (Elana), Jonathan, and Sarah. Adored great- grandfather of Jackson. Gordon will be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brothers Bill and Bob, his sister Alice. Gord Polley was born on April 20th 1915 in Toronto. The son of William and May, he had two brothers Bill and Bob and a sister Alice. When Gord was a boy his father passed away and he went to Trenton to live with his paternal grandparents. Returning to Toronto, Gord went to Western Commerce High school and was very involved in the youth group at Church of the Epiphany, where he met the vivacious Betty Watson and other wonderful friends who helped to establish Camp Koinonia. Gord joined the army during the war feeling it was great opportunity to travel and see Europe. He served in a Bren Gun carrier group, and spoke often of his war time memories. Upon his return he and Betty got married and Gord went back to his job at Goldsmiths in Toronto. Their children Don and Lynn arrived and the families close association with Camp Koinonia continued. Gord started his own business in 1959 and although he was nervous it turned out to be a great success. There was nothing he liked better in his recreation time than to go hiking on the Bruce Trail or at Camp. Gord and Betty enjoyed traveling and journeyed far and wide together while also assisting the Rev Marney Patterson of Invitation to Live Ministries. Gord thought that retirement was a dirty word and continued his business right up until his last days. A faithful member of St. Matthews Anglican Church, Gord was superintendent of the Sunday school for many years. Gord loved being a grandfather and watching Tim, Jon, and Sarah through his 30 years of being a grandfather and recently enjoyed playing with his great grandson Jack.

Man dies in collision of logging truck, car

A 25-year-old man was killed instantly when the car he was driving collided with a logging truck at about 11:45 a.m. Thursday on the Malahat Drive, just south of the Malahat Chalet, 16 miles north of Victoria. Dead is Donald Gordon Polley of the Malahat Bungalows, Malahat, a single man whose father lives in Toronto. Colwood RCMP said Polley was travelling north when his car crossed the centre line of the highway and collided with a fully-loaded logging truck travelling south. RCMP said the impact tore the left rear wheel of the truck's tractor part off the axle. Polley's vehicle, a Volkswagen Rabbit, spun around and came to rest facing south. It was demolished. Driver of the logging truck, Louis Reginald Shreenan of Shawnigan Lake, was not injured. Daily Colonist October 29th 1976

1878 Atlas says he settled there in 1840 which would be either the year of his birth or a year after which would conflict with his younger brother being born in Brantford so it may well be inaccurate.

1864 Robert and James Polley: Concession 7. Lot 1, 200 acres. Value recorded as 1600. * 1865 is the first year that father and all sons are listed as property owners.

1869 James Polley: Concession 7. Lot 1, 50 acres. Value of each parcel recorded at 400

James Polley - 29 years of age, 5 people living in his household.

I found information on Leslie W starting in 1942 where he was living in Spanaway. His wife Nancy C shows up in 1947(but remember the war years books were missing). Leslie worked as a janitor from 1951 until 1954. In 1956 he was first listed as a barber and then only for the last two years of his life. Nancy was listed as an apartment manager in 1957, but beginning in 1959(after Leslie's death) she was a nurse for an R. L. Stephens. She was no longer listed after 1963 and there was no obituary listed for her..

General Notes: Husband - John POLLEY

Apart from baptism entries relating to the children of a William and Hannah Polley, married in 1784), who shows a Johnis of Sandon as a cousin in his will in 1820, there are no baptisms relating to any Polleys before 1785 (searched back to 1757), even though John was shown "of this parish" on his marriage P/R (there are some deaths between 1757 and 1800). It must be assumed, therefore, they moved into the village. Burial entry and gravestone would have him born about 1761, while his marriage licence 1772-- needs some sorting to be sure.
Witnesses at his wedding were David Polley and a Mary AnnReeve. A lady of this name is left a legacy in the will of William Polley (1723-1801) and is a daughter of William's married daughter Ann, who married a William Reeve in 1773. Mary Ann would have been aged about 20 at the time of the wedding and is my suspicions below are proved correct would have been a niece of John. A good piece of proof, but not enough yet.
I am rapily coming to think that John is the Johnis, baptised 1759), son of William (1723-1801) but need that little something else just to be certain.
In William P will (1723-1801) Johnis P was left land called Balls at Great Baddow. Is that of any help?
========================================================================== ===========
Married Sandon, Essex 1794 (Doc188). He was married by licence and signed his own name. Doc 207 is a copy of the licence, which shows him "age upwards of 22 years" from which a year of birth can be estimated

Originally came to notice as a result of parish register entries for his various children (1796-1811). In the first three he is shown as John and then after as Johnis, probably to avoid confusion with his third born (John) or even, as shown on the parish register, signifying a change of curate. For my purposes will be John until baptism traced and name confirmed.

In the 1811 Census (ERO DP253/18/5)(Fiche) taken on 27th May 1811 Johnis is named as such and shown in occupation of one house, building another and with three other males and six females, all unnamed, also present (assumed his wife, children and servants).

He, or more likely his son John, apparantly signed as a witness at the marriage of his daughter, Mary, in 1823 (ERO ref DP253/1/12)(No copy).

John would appear to be identical with burial at Sandon in 1828 (Doc 244) (shown as Johnis in register-see above) and aged 67.

John is buried at Sandon (Photo L34 of Church), although his stone first seen in August 1998 is very worn (Photo L33) a return visit in July 1999 confirmed his date of death and age as 67 years. Again he is shown as Johnis.

Doc 292 is a copy of the Death Duty Register appertaining to Johnis. He died intestate as the Register refers to Adminisrtaion, although I am unable to make out the actual court referred to (not that it would show anything else). The Admon was sworn on the 30th September 1828 by his wife and son John and his legacy sworn as under £12,000 cash. All his children living at the time of his death are shown as entitled to a cash sum, except John who, I must assume took property.

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth SALLOWS

No trace of her baptism in Sandon P/R back to 1757, or come to that any mention of the Sallows name. It must be assumed she moved into the village. Her marriage licence shows "age upwards of 21 years" which MAY give a year of birth of 1773. Death cert would suggest year as 1775. The IGI shows an Elizabeth Sallow being baptised in Bradwell in 1770 and 1769.
Her will shows her having property in Cavendish, Suffolk late the property of Thomas Stancham, the younger (not apparantly her daughter Mary's husband). What is this all about? Will for Thomas Stancham before 1837, when her will was made, might help.
==================================================================
Married Sandon, Essex in 1794 (Doc188). She was shown as "of this parish" , married by licence and signed her own name in the register. Doc 207 is a copy of the licence.

Originally came to notice as result of parish register entries for baptisms of her children between 1794 and 1811.

It would appear that after her husbands death in 1828 she moved from Sandon to Great Baddow. Based on the fact that daughter Ann married at Great Baddow in 1832 and census below.

In the 1841 Census (HO107/325ED1F45)(Doc 254) Elizabeth is shown aged 60, (rounded down but still a couple of years out) of independent means, living with her son David and three servants.

Elizabeth died in 1842 (Cert171) aged 67. Present at death was a John Davison (?) not believed related. There were two Elizabeth's dying about this time both married to John's and aged within one year of each other. That this is the correct one is evident in that on the other certificate deceased is shown as "wife of" whereas on this one she is correctly shown as "farmer's widow" and her will, see below, has a declaration showing her as "laterly of Tolleshunt D'Arcy" the wrong cert showing her dying in Little Baddow, the correct one in Tolleshunt D'Arcy.

Elizabeth is buried along with her husband at Sandon (Photo L33 and L34 of church). The stone is badly eroded, but a return visit seems to verify her age at death as 67.

Elizabeth' will (Doc 281)(ERO 137BR35) proved in April 1842 appoints her son in law (and my GGF) Robert Francis as one of the executor's and she leaves 19 guineas each to her son's William and David (they already being well provided for) and splits the residue among her four daughters. A deposition at the end of the will shows her "formerly of Great Baddow but laterly of Tolleshunt D'Arcy".

General Notes: Child - Ann POLLEY

Ann was probably living with her daughter Mary Ketley at New London Rd, Chelmsford in 1891 cenus, but there is no street index and a couple of reels of film to search to find her. It seems sensible to wait for the 1891 Census index if and when it is completed.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ann is shown as inheriting £802 cash in her father's administration as shown in the Death Duty Register of 1828 (Doc292).

Ann was married in 1832(Doc 201) and is also named, and shown age 21, on the marriage licence (Doc202). On the parish register two witnesses amongst others are John Polley and David Polley, possibly her brothers (John is not her father as he died some four years previous).

In the 1841 Census (Doc 30) Ann is shown living with her husband and five daughters.

Ann receives one fourth part of the residue of her mother's estate in her will dated 1837 and proved in 1842 (Doc281).

Originally came to notice with her maiden name, in her son's (Robert) birth certificate in 1849 (Cert 28).

By 1851 Census (Doc 29) she is shown with husband four daughters and son Robert (my great grandfather) aged 2.

In 1861 Census (Doc 27) is shown with husband and various children. Shown born Sandon, Essex

In 1871 Census (Doc 26) is shown with husband, son Robert and daughters Charlotte and Elizabeth. Shown born sandon, Essex.

In 1881 Census (Doc307) is still living with husband, son Robert and two daughters Charlotte and Ellen.

In her husbands will (Doc 32 Probated 1885) Ann is left the premises owned by them at Ulting, Essex together with whatever fixture and fittings she wants from St Clares (Cleres) Hall in Danbury (the latter to be sold to their son Robert Alfred).

Ann died in 1891 (Cert 122) refers. She left a will, with her son Robert Alfred Francis and son-in-law, Charles Everard, farmers, as executors, the will being proved on the 23 Mary 1892. Effects were £59 13s 5d.and apart from ten guineas to each of the executors, she divides her estate among her ten named children.

Ann is buried, along with her husband, at St John the Baptist Parish Church, Danbury. Her side of the stone is partly unreadable, when visited in April 1997, but reads "(first line too feint) Ann wife of Robert Francis Died Dec 30 1891 Aged 81 years". See Photos L11 & L12.
