General Notes: Husband - Abraham FRANCIS

Apparantly he was born in Hatfield Peveral and baptised in Ulting in 1815. Doc 382, a newspaper cutting, shows him born at Stock Hall.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++
Born in March 1815 as obtained from his grave stone (Doc382).

Originally came to notice as result of being named as a beneficiary in his father's will written in 1848 and proved in 1849. Unlike his brothers (see below-he had emigrated) he was not given any options to buy his father's property and was treated exactly like his sisters in that he receives a one sixth share of the total legacy (£1500) on the subsequent death of his mother.

The following notes were supplied by Harriett Nolan (a direct descendent of Abraham's) in 1999 and amount to a good account of his life after he left the UK to live in Canada, contain Canadian census entries from 1852 to 1881 and his obituary in a local paper:-

At the age of 13 [1828] Abraham Francis apprenticed to a physician for 7 years;then attended lectures at Guys and St Thomas Hospitals where he received the Degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1837, from
the Royal Academy of Physicians and Surgeons, now the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
He left for Mosa Township,Middlesex Co.Ontario Canada [Canada West] in 1837. On the same ship S/S James was a family from Udimore, Sussex, England, named Baker. Their daughter Harriet ,17,and Abraham became great friends and upon arriving at their port of Entry, proceeded to Augusta, New York together. Abraham and Harriet agreed she would wait for his return to her after he had established Residency and Medical Practice in Mosa Township Middlesex Co.,Province of Ontario Canada. We believe from family journal's notes that he returned to England late 1840 and upon his return, married Harriet Bennett Baker on 10 June 1841 in Augusta Oneida Co.,NYS. No record of their marriage has been officially found, only an entry in the family Bible.

Chapman Courier August 1888 Page 3 col 2 OBITUARY
DIED-On Tuesday,July 31,1888 of a complication of dysentery and
heart disease,Harriett,beloved wife of Dr A. Francis,aged 67 years
and 6 days.
Harriett Baker was born in Rye Sussex,England,July 25th 1821. At
the age of 20 she removed to the state of New York where she
married Dr A.Francis,Jun 18 1841.
The young couple immediately removed to Delaware Ontario. Here they
resided for about 40 years, raising a family of seven children, four
sons and three daughters, now all grown. Part of the family moving
west, their parents, who were now growing quite old, followed them to
Kansas City in November 1886,and finally to Chapman in the month of
May,1888.
The deceased has for a number of years, been a sufferer from heart
disease,so when she became one of The unfortunate victims of THe
present epidemic of dysentery, her vitality, after a short seige of
five days, gave way and her old complaint proved master of the
situation at noon,on Tuesday,July 31.
The funeral was appointed for Wednesday morning ,but the extreme
heat interfered with the arrangements and her remains were laid
away in Indian Hill Cemetery Wednesday evening just as the sun had
shed its last rays of light on the sad mourners.
The funeral ceremony was conducted by Rev.McWright according to the
rites of the Episcopal church of England, of which the deceased was
a life-long consistent member.
Of the five children who live abroad, four arrived in time for the
funeral, but one son, living in the mining district of Winsconsin, was
unable to come.
The gentle ,loving and affable disposition of the deceased had won
the esteem of many new acquaintances at this place. This was
plainly shownby the helpfulsympatheticmood of her neighbours as
they came flocking with numerous floral tributes of
appropriatedesigns, and kind words and deeds of sympathy. We can
assure the greived family that they have the universal sympathy of
the many newly made freinds in our city, and that what can be done
even at this late date to ease the pang caused by thus suddenly
losing a kind, attentive, beloved and loving Christian Mother and
wife,will be done with pleasure.

Harriet's notes show that Harriet was buried at Indian Hill Cemetary, Chapman, Kansas, USA on the 1st August 1888.

Photo L50 is of Harriet (supplied by Harriett Nolan) taken C1881 and Doc 382 a newspaper cutting of her grave which verifies dates of birth and death.

General Notes: Child - Hannah Victoria FRANCIS

All information as regards Hannah has been supplied by Harriet Nolan and, as far as I am concerned is unconfirmed. She was an accomplished pianist and a very talented artist. A beautiful detailed pencil sketch of the Francis Home in England "Stock Hall" dated 9th July 1957, by Hannah when she was 15 years old, is in the family possession. On the reverse of the frame is written "Presented to my brother "Dick" A.A. Francis on this visit to me, Aug 11th 1900" and signed H.V. Francis, Brussels.
She was also an accomplished seamstress leaving several velvet brocade and silk embroidered quilts. The women of this family were reared as fine English breed ladies, very able to keep a fine home.
During her twenties Hannah met and was engaged to a Mr. Smallman but he died as a result on an accident when ice gave way on the River Thames, which runs thro Delaware, Ontario, and he was drowned, following which she never married. Her father conveyed a piece of land to her and this was recorded on the 15th March 1878 in Page 152 on Park Lot 2, Plan 47 Delaware. Hannah then conveyed this same piece of land to her mother on the 8th August 1879, recorded on the 8th January 1881, and this may indicate when her fiance's untimely death occurred. She lived for many years in Brussels (Ontario) giving music lesons, painting and participating in community musical programs.

All the following are memories as given by Frances Marks Landy (Hannah's Aunt) to her daughter Harriet Nolan:-
After her parents death (1888/9) Hannah was living in Brussels, Ontario with a Mrs Rogers. When Harriet, her sister later Marks, left the family home in Chapman, Kansas she stayed with Hannah for a short while before going to to Toronto to work and to be near another sister, Emma. Hannah also lived in St Jospeh's, Michigan with her brother Robert, who after a short time with her went back to Duluth. After the death of Mary Somerville Marks (not known to me) at her sister Harriet's and her husband's home on the Maple Road, Hannah and her brother Robert both came in the Spring of 1928 to live with the Marks family (Robert later to return again to Duluth) and stayed there until her care was too much and she was taken to the county home. When Hannah was taken to Niagara County Infirmary Hospital her sister Harriet never went to see her nor did she attend the funeral. Hannah was taken from the Kennedy Funeral Home to be buried in the Marks Plot at the North Ridge Cemetary. The pallbearers were Charles Kamper, Roy W. Landy, Edward T. Marks and Pierce Landy. Hannah died of organic heart diesease aged 91.

General Notes: Child - Elizabeth Fairhead FRANCIS

All dates and information about Elizabeth supplied by Harriet Nolan. She was born in Mosa Township, Middlesex County, Ontario in 1843 and was baptised on the 31st Decemeber that year at Delaware, Middlesex County. Apparantly she married a Mr. Gaines and died in childbirth at Port Huron, Michigan, USA in 1867. It is believed that a son was born to her, but no details have been found.

General Notes: Child - Mary Ann FRANCIS

The parents of Mary Ann's husband were William Ratcliff and Sarah nee Polley. I have people of this name as one of the children of John Polley and Elizabeth Sallows and this seems too much of a coincidence. Enquiries in hand and who is the Martha Polley living with the Ratcliffes, see below)
========================================================================== ===========
All details of Mary were supplied by Harriet Nolan. Mary married a William Henry Ratcliff (date unknown) and had three children by him, Sarah born 1871, William born 1874 and Robert Born 1877. The family were in the sawmill business and Henry (William Henry) followed his father into this trade and then his son, Robert, took over. Robert provided a picnic park connected with the sawmill. Then the sons of Robert (Donald, Floyd and Howard-no further pars) jointly owned and operated the sawmill and the farn surrounding the Mill. In the 1940's Floyd remained with the farm while his brothers, Donald and Haoward continued with the mill. A Paul and Harold Ratcliff are now the 5th generationin the business. Until 1970 when the sawmill ceased operation water power was used. The family continues in the lumber trade with two outlets, one in Unionville and the other in Gormley. The Great Tree lying in the Ratcliff Industrial Park on the Whitechurch Town Line was there until lightning felled it in 1976 the last of the mighty giants William found on his arrival. The Mill, known now as Century Mill, is a township landmark.

In the April 1871 Canadian Census for Markham, Ontario, Canada Mary is shown aged 25, born Ontarion and living with her husband only (Info Harriett Nolan and Vicki Munro). For information Markham was a small township north of Toronto and still is, but the city has now expanded to swallow it up and, in our language, it is just a suburb.

Mary Ann died in Markham, Canada March 1878(Info Harriett Nolan).

General Notes: Child - Robert Livingstone FRANCIS

ALL information on Robert supplied by Hariet Nolan.
Baptised 4th June 1848 at Delaware Christs Church.
He was a loner and most adventurous as a young man. At one time he started for the Alaskan gold fields, but became a cook for the miners in the Yukon. No other clues to his whereabouts untill 1888 when his mail was addressed to Grand Porterage, Minnesota where he received the letter from his father telling of his mother's death in July of that year. A description of Grand Porterage taken from the Minnesota State Guide by Viking Press in 1933 is "SW from international border 49.4 miles from Canada. A swath through the woods, crossing the highway, marks the famed overland passage from Lake Superior to Pigeon River. This 9 mile portage was used by voyagers and fur tradeds to avoid the falls and rapids in Pigeon River (Chippawa Indian Area). This region is the most rugged in Minnesota. Mineral Centrer is a small village 5.8 miles from Grand Porerage" and is 1938 consisted of a few cabins and hi=ouses, ageneral store and post office....... and an old cabin used by historical museum, housing relics and indian handwork.
He had settled on Birch Island in MacCargoe Cove near Isle Royale and becams known as "Captain Francis", but research has shown that at no time was he a freighter or tanker skipper on the Great Lakes.
He did accomodate sportsmen who came to enjoy the escellent fly fishing to be found in the MacCargoe Cove.
He was an authority on the relics and ore deposits to be found on the Isle Royale. He helped an archeolory team from Wisconsin on their research of the ancient copper workings on Isle Royale and was mentioned many times in their report published in Volume 10, July to October 1911, number 2 quarterley bulletin of the Wisconsin Archeological Society.
In the late 1920's he moved to St Joseph, Michegan and lived with his sister Hannah until spring of 1929. Harriet Francis Marks and her husband went out to Michigan and brought them to Wilson, NYS to live. "Bob finding very little to do treturned to his step-daughter's home at 118 W. Palmetto Street, Duluth, Minnesota.
When he died Harriet Marks's husband went to Duluth to take care of Robert's affairs and found no large estate as he had reported. No will was probated. During his lifetime his middle name was changed from Lawrence to Livingston, as city directories listed him as Francis, Robert L., and Francis, Lawrence R., as a fisherman from 1910-1928, always living at 118 WPalmetto Street. Duluth Directories also list him as
a fisherman and captain of tugboat "T.R. Anderson" from 1894-1895 of the same address.

In 1887 he was living with his father and family at 914, Johnson Avenue, Kansas City and was conductor on the K.C.C. Railway. In 1888 he was listed in the Chapman Courier, Kansas as an agent for the Union Pacific Railway. After the death of his ftaher (1889) Erasmus and his brother William left for the gold fields of Colorado (Cripple Creek Area). In a handbook written later by him, Erasmus says that he worked in the fish hatcheries in Colorado, but no records of this could be found.
About 1910 he moved to the Fiji Islands and was responsible for an experimental introduction of the rainbow trout into the Fijis and ".....for the erection of ponds at Nava, seven miles from Nadarivatu, under Mount Victoria in Viti Levu". His residence was on the site of Navai Ono Plantation where he had copra and is located at Savu Savu Central, Vanna Leon, Fiji.
At some stage he must have visited Australia for in 1919 at All saints Church, Liecharat, Sydney he married. In the church records he listed his address as a planter in North Sydney although it is thought he was still resident in Fiji. He listed his age as 55, but was in reality 61.
Erasmus died at the N.M.P. Nabauto Hospital, Fiji Islands in 1945 as a result of a fractured femure, pneumonia, chronic rheumatism and chronic bronchitis aged 87. He was buried on the 1st December 1945 at the Ono Plantation.

General Notes: Child - William Lees FRANCIS

ALL information about William supplied by Hariet Nolan.
He was baptised on the 29th June 1862 at Christs Church, Delaware, Ontario, Canada and probably moved to the Kansa City area with his parents and brothers about 1884. He was married by licence in 1886 at Trinity Church, Jackson County, Kansas City by the Rector Robert Talbot.
He is listed in the Kansas City Directories in 1887 as a mail carier living in Jefferson and in 1892 as a post office carrier. After his father's death in 1889 William and his brother left for the gold fields of Criplle Creek area (bekieved in the late 1890's) but no trace of his family can be found to tell if they accompanied him. His sister, Hannah, had a piece of jewellery from Cripple Creek, that being the only reason for the area being listed.
A card from the Kansas City record department reveals a son, Parker W. Francis being born on the 19th january 1894 at 2033, Jefferson Street. William, his wife and son are listed in the 1900 Census living at this same address, aged 37, 33 (born England), and 6 respectively.
He is shown as dying in Colorado but no details given.

General Notes: Child - Harriet Lydia FRANCIS

ALL information about Harriett supplied by her grand daughter Harriett Nolan.
Her exact birthdate has not been found in church records, the only trace being from censuses and the year differs from 1863-1865, but was baptised at Christ's Church, Delaware on the 10th January 1866.

At the age of 7 she went to live with her sister Mary Ann in Markham, Ontario, Cnada and it may be that at this time her parents had returned to England. At a young age she attended Miss Godfrey's school and was tutored with the Seabrook children in Delaware, Ontario. She was active in the work at Chist Church, Delaware as shown by a copy of a letter written by Mr. Asbury, Mr. Montgomery, M de Blaquin, M.A.Hammond, Gertrude Gibson and Matthew Scott upon her move from Delaware, with her parents to Kansas City in 1886. In 1887 they all moved again to Chapman, Kansas, where she taught instumental music until her parents deaths in 1888/9. She moved back to Toronto and lived at 99, Jameson Avenue, where she worked as a milliner. In 1894 Hattie L. Francis was listed in the area directory as living at 554, King Street West, Toronto working as a milliner with Thomas Thompson & Son. By 1896 she was boarding at 283, Sherbourne, Toronto and listed as a milliner with John Eaton & Co, that same year her future husband working at Stone & Wellington Nursery, Toronto, as a clerk and later as a clerk at Pelham Nursey. In early 1898 she moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake as a milliner, while Thomas moved to Fonthill, where his parents lived across from the Pelham Nursery.
Thomas and Hattie married in 1898 at St Marks Anglican Church with their reception being held at Roselawn the estate of Colonel Alexander Servos. She was given away by her brother Abraham
After they married they moved to Rochester, NYS where their children were born, then to Geneva, NYS and then Wilson, NYS they in lived in lake Strret and in 1914 in Maple Street, where they started Marks Nursey business, Harriett experimenting with rose cultivation.
Harriett died at home in Maple Street, Wilson, NYS and was buried at North Ridge Cemetary on the 23rd February 1937.
