He was a farmer and bought 142.83 acres of land in the Parish of Acadia between the small town of Church Point and the settlement of Branch. There were ten children in this family.
Mary Ann died Oct. 23, 1923. William Thomas died Sept. 13, 1927 leaving an estate of $5,288.00 to be divided among six heirs and six children of deceased heir, Oliver Owen. Each heir received $652,36. The heirs of Oliver each received $108.72. Probate was done Dec. 23, at Crowley, La. Attorney was H. Gordon Brunson, Mayor of Crowley, La.
This probate was contested by some of the heirs. A lawyer was obtained to examine the proceedings, with a view to opposing the account and the discharge of the administrator. There seemed to be a disagreement about a few hundred dollars that had been charged by the administrator, Joe Murrell, and land in Texas, [four lots in Port Arthur]some hogs and chickens, value about $250.00, plus the value of the land.
The estate was settled and money was appropriated to the heirs.
The money for the heirs of Oliver was put in the Farmers Bank and Trust Co. in the town of Church Point. When Cora wanted to withdraw the money to deposit in a Crowley bank she had to go to the courts in order to do this. H. Gordon Brunson was the lawyer she got to petition the court and the courts approved the transfer. However, upon presentation of the order to the Farmers Bank she was informed that the funds were deposited in a times deposit represented by certificates and held by F.M. Fontenot, Clerk: and that it was necessary that she secure the certificates of deposit. Mr. Brunson received the order for the certificates and received them on the 4th day of Aug. 1930.
In April, 1931 a petition was filed asking disbarment of Mr. Brunson, from the practise of law in Louisiana, charging dishonest acts and sites nine counts.
In one specification it is charged that in handling the estate of W.T. Murrell and Mary McBride, he withdrew $652.36 from the bank at Church Point which had been on deposit for minor children saying he had been directored by Mrs. O.O. Murrell to deposit it in another bank and did not return the money until under pressure of demand, at the insistence of the mother, with aid of counsel. The disbarment committee says the unauthorized withdrawal of the funds of the minors constituted a gross fraud not only upon the court, but upon the mother of the children.
"The defendant, contriving to obtain the moneys of the minors for his own uses, presented on Aug. 2, 1930 a petition, on the behalf of Mrs. Murrell and minor children, that she to have the funds removed from Church Point and deposit in some institution of her choice. He asked for an order directing the bank to turn over the money to the mother or her attorney, H. Gordon Brunson. He deposited the money to his own account in
the Bank of Commerce in Crowley and thereafter appropriated said funds to his own use".At the time this was done the mother had not been appointed tutrix and he knew that she had not authorized him to make such application on her behalf, the petition stated.
Mayor Brunson died from complications of an appendix operation in 1931. He was serving the first year of a second term as Mayor. He was first elected to the post of chief executive of Crowley in April 1928 and took over as mayor in July for a two year term. In 1930 he was re-elected to the post for a four year term, and he had not completed the first year.
He was buried from the First Baptist Church. Rev. H.J. McCool delivered the funeral service.
He was 31 years of age.

During the formative years of Acadia Parish the establishment of schools was one of the high priority projects undertaken by leaders of the Parish.

The first school board was set up in 1887. One of the board members to serve between this time and 1920 was John Dillard Murrell of Church Point.

In 1902 he was elected mayor of Church Point, Louisiana and served in this office until 1909.

He was an officer of Deville's Iron Works which was charted in 1901 as the Church Point Mfg. Co.

About 1906 he and his brother built a new hardware store on the main street. After the railroad came to Church Point, many new homes were built and many businesses were updated to improve their business. This was the case with the hardware store. That building is still there today.
Great excitement prevailed in Church Point in 1901 when 20 of the towns most prominent citizens formed a company to mine gold near the town.
The organization of the mining company was effected after a substance, found on Homer Barousse farms, was analyzed as gold. About the time of the Civil War a well had been dug on the property: at about 28 feet down a substance resembling slate laced with something that appeared to be gold had been brought up. Apparently the substance had been kept until it was again analyzed and declared to be gold.

J.D. was one of the officers of the Church Point Gold Mining Co. The company issued 20 shares of stock at $100 a share.

The well where the substance was found was boarded up and armed guards posted around it day and night. Despite some scoffing editorial comments in several southwest La. newspapers, the investors evidently had faith in the mine. Two weeks after the analysis report, one share holder refused a ten-to-one offer for his share. However, subsequent news reports from Church Point made no mention of the gold mine. The thought was that the analysis may have been made by some unqualified person.

John married Lucille Bernadette McBride, daughter of Henry David McBride and Marie Louise Perrodine.
They had eight children
John is buried CPCI #29 Lucille is probably buried in Lafayette Cemetery . I find her plot but no burial in Church Point.
Henry David is a brother to Mary Ann McBride, our grandmother.
