-------------------------------------------------------------------
Edith May Baker was the second child and only daughter of Arthur
Thomas Baker and Edith nee Francis who had married just four months
after her father's tragic death when he went down with his ship
Kyber off the Cornish coast in March 1905.
Edith May's father was a Mariner and the family were living in
Chatham when first child Arthur Francis was born in 1908. Then it
was back to Liverpool where Edith May was born in 1911.
By 1915, the Baker family was back in Kent and living at 120
Gardiner Street Gillingham. Mother, Edith was admitted to St
Bartholomew's Hospital ,haemorrhaging from an ectopic pregnancy.
She died on 12th April 1915 and Arthur Thomas took the two children
back to home port, Liverpool where he remarried, providing his two
young children with a step mother and several step brothers and
sisters.
It was a disaster for Arthur Francis and Edith May who sufferred a
'life of hell' from their extremely cruel, drunkard step mother.
The few precious heirlooms which belonged to Edith nee Francis were
sold for mor grog leaving the two little children dispossessed of
everything including love. with their father mostly away at sea.
When Edith May left school at 14, she worked for a short while in
the bakery which had belonged to her grandfather,John Baker, in
Grey Street but unfortunately she could not tolerate the extreme
heat in the bakehouse and had to seek alternative employment.
Meanwhile, her older brother Arthur , had joined the RNVR and met
Robert Eric Foster with whom he formed a strong friendship.
One day, around 1926, when Edith May was just 15 years old, Arthur
invited Robert Eric home and so a romance blossomed. In 1928, just
prior to Robert Eric was about to travel overseas in his new
capacity as Ship's carpenter, theyannounced their engagement and
had a joint studio photograph to commemmorate the occasion.
Eric was away until 1930 and they lost no time in being married
inspite of the Great Depression.
Mary L. (Polly) Baker formerly Andrews , died in April 1930 and it
was the wish of her husband,Arthur Thomas, that the young couple
postpone their wedding as a mark of respect but as Edith May told
me (her daughter) many years later, she had no respect for her
during her lifetime and she refused to put off her wedding "as a
mark of respect" The only concession made was that Edith May wore a
pale blue gown for her wedding instead of traditional white.
This act alienated her father and they were never again on really
good terms. However, following the death of her first step mother,
father married for the third time. Again a widow with children from
a previous marriage. Cathrine Moore (Cassie) and Arthur Thomas were
married as early as 1931 and the feud between father and daughter
abated a little.
Edith May had six children and followed her husband as he travelled
south to Chatham seeking work throughout the depression years.
She had a multitude of jobs which include, during the war years,
she worked in Shorts Airplane factory then after the war, Edith was
an Insurance collecter for the Prudential Insurance Company. Many
years of seasonal farm work. Potato picking, beans, cabbages,
apples pears and berries. Hop picking and Hop training.
Edith May also worked as a cook in the busman's canteen, aspiring
to Manageress, then worked as a shelf packer when the very first
supermarket (Tescos) opened in Chatham. She worked for a while in
Faringdon's shoe shop as a sales assistant then went to work in
Chatham Dockyard where she worked in the electrical stores for many
years until she and husband Robert Eric retired in October 1971 .
She witnessed 5 of her children desert the shores of England to
seek their fortunes in three different continents and finally,
following the celebration of their Golden Wedding in 1980, Robert
Eric and Edith May packed up their home of 40 years in Wayfield
Road Chatham and migrated to Melbourne Australia where they settled
very quickly and enjoyed their new way of life for the remainder of
their days, continuing their connection with the Oddfellows Lodge.

FOSTER FAMILY'S GOLDEN REUNION
Visitors from all parts of the globe came to Chatham on Saturday to
help the Foster family celebrate a double wedding anniversary.
For not only did Robert and Edith Foster celebrate their golden
wedding anniversary but their eldest son Robert Jnr and his wife
Kathleen also celebrated 25 years of marriage.
And the fact that the two couples live thousands of miles apart
didn't daunt the foster family.
Robert junr and his wife flew in from South Africa to help mum and
dad of Wayfield Road Chatham celebrate the occasion.
And the rest of the family and friend s came too- including five
five brothers and sisters,19 grandchildren and nine great-
grandchildren.
Eldest daughter Edith came from Australia for the celebrations as
ddid other daughters Doreen and Vivienne and their families.
Son Adrian and his wife and three children arrived from Canada and
second eldest son Colin- the only child who does not live abroad-
came from Staines in middlesex.
A meal ffor 80 people was the highlight of the joint celebrationb
at the Odd Fellows Hall in Luton Road and after the food more
guests arrived to ensure the party went on well into the evening.
Seventy-four -year-old Robert Foster and his wife Edith (69)
originate from Lancashire. They moved to Chatham in 1939 and Robert
worked in the Dockyard as a shipwright until 1971.
Son Robert lived in Chatham until 1971 when he moved abroad to take
up a job with the South African Post Office .
For Edith the "happy coincidence" of the wedding anniversaries
marked a truly golden day.
She said" This is the happiest day of my life. It's lovely to have
all our children together again and highlights the joys of having
such a great big family.

CROYDON POST (Victoria Australia) Wednesday May 30th 1990-
CLAN REUNION FOR 60th ANNIVERSARY
Large photograph ^Eric and Edith Foster-making plans for the
future,together.
small inset photo>The Foster clan reunites to celebrate Eric and
Edith's 60th.Wedding anniversary.
Text reads: With 60 years of marriage behind them,Mr Eric
Foster and his wife edith are making plans for the future-together
of course.
Mr and Mrs Foster originally came from Liverpool in the UK.
But as each of their children left British shores for more exotic
climes, the Fosters decided Australia might be the place for their
retirement.
So they have spent the last nine years living in Croydon with
one of their six children.
And last Saturday saw the meeting of the clan as the Foster's
six children 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren attended
the couples memorable 60th Anniversary.
With husbands and wives in attendance there was no shortage
of love or well-wishes from the proud descendants.
So important was the occasion in fact, that a son travelled
from Canada, another from South Africa and yet another from britain
to be with their parents on the historic day.
