Part owner of Polley & White, manufacturers of Canadian evaporated apples, and one of the largest handlers of dried apples and fruit, and also green apples, in the district. Gord Polley remembers his Grandpa was an "Apple man through and through" also that the evaporated apple factory caught fire and burned to the ground, unfortunatly there was no insurance so that was the end of that business. Some stationary from the apple factory still exists.

An old Trenton resident passed away at his home Monday morning in the person of Mr. William Harrison Polly in his eighty-eighth year. He was one of the old pioneers of Trenton having resided there for sixty years. Mr. Polly came to Trenton from Castelton as a young man when Trenton was nothing but a village. Here he settled and entered the exporting business. He entered the Customs Office in 1913 as Collector of Customs where he carried on his duties making a host of friends. He was superanuated in 1921 when he retired to his home on Murphy St.
He is survived by his wife and daughter, Miss Bertha Polly of Trenton. The funeral took place from St. George's Church on Tuesday afternoon the Rev. Heywood preaching the funeral sermon. Interment took place in the Anglican Cemetery where Mr. Polly will be buried. Many beautiful floral wreaths attest the fact of Mr Polly's many friends.

Mrs Mary Polley, Aged 74 years wife of the late Wm Polley former Collector of Customs died at her home on Murphy St on Monday, June 17th after a lingering illness of eight months. Mrs Polley was born in Murray Township on the York Road, the daughter of the late Frank and Janet Maguire.
She is survived by one daughter Mrs Bertha Maguire and one sister, Mrs. Hugh Colborne both of Trenton. Mr. Harry Lafferty, York Road is a half brother.
The funeral service was conducted by Rev. F. Arthur Smith in St. George's Anglican Church on Wednesday afternoon.
The pall-bearers were Messrs E. James, A. A. Cullin, E. Wessels, Robt. Weddell, G.L. Bonter and A. Arnott.

William and Mary do not seem to be married in Ontario, as of April 2008 I can't find any record of that marriage, they may have married in Rochester.
The census records from 1880(US) and 1881(CAN) show them as single and show their son William Jr as using the surname McGUIRE in 1880.
So if they got married it is more than likely in late 1881 or later, William Jr's immagration to Canada took place at either 1881(1911 census) or 1882(1901 census) so they may have been married before he and Mary came back to Canada.

The family story goes that he was born in Rochester New York when his parents were on a boat trip from Trenton to Quebec City and return. Born on the return trip to Trenton. However this seems to be a story created to cover up the fact that he was born before his parents were married. He is in the 1880 US census as "Willie McGuire" with his Mom living in a boarding house in Rochester. It is likely she was sent over there to give birth as it wasn't uncommon for unmarried girls to be sent away to have their children in those days. It is unclear when or where his parents did end up marrying but they are listed as married in the 1891 census.

Obsequies Largely Attended Service at St. George's Church on Sunday
The remains of the late William Polley, Jr., reached Trenton on Saturday and were removed to the family residence on Murphy Street, from whence the cortege moved on Sunday afternoon to St. George's Church for service.
The church where the deceased attended as a boy and young man was filled with his many friends, who gathered to pay the last tribute to his memory. Many friends, fellow workers of the C.P.R., and brother Masons of both Toronto and Montreal joined with his numerous Trenton friends in attending the obsequies.
The Church of England service was conducted by the Vicar, Rev. A. L. McTear. Rev. Canon Armstrong, Rector of St. George's Church for so many years and an intimate friend of the deceased and family, read the lesson. The choir rendered appropriate music and Mr. G. H. Cobley sang "One Sweetly Solemn Thought."
The pall-bearers were his intimate friends of Toronto. The honorary W. A. Bleecker, R. G. Weddell, W. H. Ireland, H. F. Whittier and W. House.
The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful and covered his grave in St. George's cemetery.
W. H. Polley, aged 43, former city ticket agent of the Canadian Pacific Railway, died early yesterday after a serious illness extending over a period of eight months, at his home at 60 Fermanagh Avenue. The funeral will be held from the home of his parents in Trenton, on Sunday. St. Alban's Lodge, 514, A. F. and A. M., of which he was a member, will have charge of the service. The body will be shipped to Trenton to-day. A Masonic service will be held in his home in Toronto at noon to-day. Mr. Polley began his railroad career as a clerk at the Union office in the Kind Edward Hotel, succeeding Christopher Bunting later as agent. In May 1913, he was appointed traveling passenger agent for the Canadian Pacific and in October, 1913, assistant city passenger agent. In December, 1918 he was appointed city ticket agent but was forced to leave his position in October on account of an illness which became aggravated, later causing his death. He is survived by his widow and four children, William, Alice, Gordon and Robert; a sister, Mrs. A. Maguire, and his parents in Trenton, where his father is employed in the customs office. Mr. Polley was a member of the Western Golf Club and was deservedly popular among a very wide circle of acquaintances.

In the summer of 1833, Rev. Peter MacNaughton arrived in Upper Canada from Aberdeen, under the direction of the Glasgow Colonial Society, Inducted to the charge of Vaughan on 21 August 1833, Rev. MacNaughton was originally appointed to serve the Presbyterian congregations in the Townships of Thorah and Eldon near Lake Simcoe; however, he found these congregations unwilling to grant him a secure ministry. He left Thorah and Eldon "with a heavy heart" and went on to Vaughan where, in a letter sent back to the Society dated 21 August 1833, he indicated that he found "the Gaelic people overjoyed on finding one to address them in their own language." He goes on to say that, "I have settled at Vaughan and I do not of conscience expect any more aid from the Society at Glasgow." Church records indicate that Rev. MacNaughton was granted a stipend of 30 pounds annually by the congregation at Maple.
Because the church had no manse in its early years Rev. MacNaughton initially lived with families of the congregation for a month at a time. He then built a log house on the south east corner of Lot 21, Concession 7 where he lived with his own family until 1848 when he left the charge.
Rev. MacNaughton was on of ten ministers and missionaries sent by the Glasgow Colonial Society to preach un Upper Canada in 1833. Being sent under the directions of the Established Church of Scotland, Rev. MacNaughton soon joined the York Presbytery of the of the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Canada (Kirk Synod). This first Synod of Ministers connected with the Established Church of Scotland was formed in Kingston in 1831 and divided into four Presbyteries: Quebec, Glengarry, Bathurst and York.
Being one of only ten congregations in the York Presbytery in 1837 required Rev. MacNaughton to hold mission services in other communities outside of Maple. A new Church was built by August 1884, later named St. Paul's, in the west of Vaughan which meant that Rev. MacNaughton had two churches in his charge.
In July 1844, Rev. Peter MacNaughton resigned his pastoral charge in Maple and returned to Scotland where he became minister of the parish of Dores. Following Rev. MacNaughton's resignation, the York Presbytery took charge over the Vaughan congregation, sending other ministers and theology students to preach at their Sunday services. The congregation had developed an extremely close bond with their first minister, however, and in 1845 they asked the York Presbytery to send Rev. MacNaughton a letter asking him to return to the charge at Vaughan. In July 1846, Rev, MacNaughton accepted the call and returned to Maple. His stay this time was very brief, however, for in December 1848 he accepted a call to Pickering. Rev. MacNaughton served in Pickering from December 1848 to November 1856 when, for some unknown reason, he severed all connections with the Presbyterian Church. PETER McNAUGHTAN or McNAUGHTON born Comrie 1799, second son of John M., farmer; educated at Univ of Glasgow M.A. (1821); ord. (by Presb. Of Auchterarder) March 1833, and went to Canada under the auspices of the Glasgow Colonial Society with the view of settling at Eldon and Thorah; shortly after his arrival he selected another sphere of labour and was adm. to Vaughan, Ontario, 21st Aug. 1833; dem. July 1844 on a presentation to this parish by John Frederick, Earl of Cawdor and adm. 27th Sep. following; dem. 9th June 1846, and returned to Canada; became min. of his former charge at Ontario, in 1848; res. That charge and all connection with the Church 21st Nov. 1855; died 10th May 1878. He marr. 1st July 1835, Agnes Elizabeth Monteith, who died 17th March 1889, and had issue - Maria Ann Innes, born 18th July 1826; Sarah Frances, born 12th Nov. 1828; Grace Elizabeth, born 6th June 1841; John born 22nd Aug. 1843, died 25th July 1844; Peter, born 17th Nov. 1845.

In the following year the congregation called as his successor Rev. Peter McNaughton, of Vaughan. Mr. McNaughton was the son of a Perthshire farmer, born in 1797. He was educated at Glasgow University, where he took the degree of M.A. In 1823 he was ordained and inducted into the parish of Doors. Felling it his duty to help supply the need in Canada, he gave up this comfortable living and crossed the Atlantic in 1829. Soon after he was settled in Vaughan, where he preached on the Fourth and Seventh Concessions, both in Gaelic and English. He also preached on the Ninth Concession and at Woodbridge, besides giving occasional service in King and other more distant townships. He was well-known and welcome visitor in many a backwoods cabin.
Physically, Mr. McNaughton was well-fitted for such a toilsome life, being over six feet in height and powerfully built. But constant overwork tells even on the strongest, and when, in 1848, a call was extended to him by the Pickering congregation, he accepted it as offering some relaxation from the heavy strain. He was settled in Pickering in 1849. Few to-day would regard the Pickering charge of that time as a sinecure, with its two charges over seven miles apart; bit its duties were somewhat lighter than those of Vaughan.
Mr. McNaughton's pastorate in Pickering was not a long one. With the secularization of the Clergy Reserves in 1854 the Government offered the Church of Scotland ministers annuities of $450 on condition of signing a certain document. The declaration contained in this document he could not conscientiously subscribe, and though all the other ministers ultimately consented he remained firm. It meant the sacrifice of the annuity, and Mr. McNaughton felt constrained to withdraw from the Church he had served all of his life. In 1857 he took up residence on his farm near Brougham, and in 1857 returned to Vaughan, where he built a handsome residence on his property near Maple. He preached frequently and continued to take an active interest in church work. He died in 1878, leaving a widow and two sons and four daughters. Three daughters and both sons are still living, and are well-known residents of Vaughan.
Peter graduated with an M.A. in 1821.
His matriculation record in 1813 says:
Second son of John, Comrie, Farmer. From Oliver & Boyd Almanacs, person of the same name was at one time Church of Scotland Minister at (1) Vaughan, Presbytery of Toronto, Canada, and (2) Pickering there.

According to Volume A of the Abstract Index to Deed Titles for Vaught Township, the Crown patent for the west half of Lot 19, originally comprised of 100 acres, was granted to George McBride in May of 1801. In June of 1835, the lot was sold to John Velie, who immediately resold the property to Donald McNaughton in November of 1835.
The 1851-52 census of Vaughan Township provided additional information about Lot 19, Concession 5. The agricultural returns for 1851 indicated that Donald McNaughton farmed 100 acres on Lot 19, 60 of which were under cultivation. The produce from the farm included butter, cheese, barrels of pork, wool, 39 yards of flannel, wheat, peas, oats, and potatoes. Donald, aged 42 years old and his wife, Isobel, aged 37 years old, were both born in Scotland. Their children had all been born in Canada, including the oldest, Ann, aged 16 years old. The family occupied a one storey log house according to the census. In 1861, the family still occupied Lot 19 according to the 1860-1861 census, however, their dwelling had changed to a one and one half storey frame house, and an additional ten acres had been cleared.
By 1871, McNaughton had acquired 500 acres, five dwelling houses and five barns and stables in Vaughan Township according to Schedule 3 of the 1871 census. His home farm remained on Lot 19 however, and in 1895, his son James was granted title of the property for the sum of $1.00. The map of Vaughan Township in the 1878 Historical Atlas of the County of York illustrated a structure on the west half of Lot 19 close to Weston Road, west of the archaeological site A1Gv-165. As the material from the archaeological site is characteristic of the early nineteenth-century, it is suggested at that 1878 Atlas structure on Lot 19 marks the location of the frame house listed in the 1861 census. The archaeological site, therefore, marks the location of the earlier log cabin noted in the 1851 census. 157,922
