General Notes: Husband - Sidney Joseph AYO
Sidney Ayo was my grandfather, and I always knew him as Papa -- a gentle, soft-spoken, lean man with white hair and a kind smile. He was truly one of the sweetest people IÕve ever known; I donÕt think I ever heard him say an unkind word to, or about, anyone. His greatest love was fishing, and he and my dad and I used to frequently go to the Atchafalaya Basin at Henderson, and go out in his small motorboat to fish for bass and perch among the cypress stumps. I was only eight when he died, and I regret to this day that I didnÕt have the time to get to know my grandfather better.
General Notes: Wife - Flora Marie MEYER
Flora Meyer, my maternal grandmother, died of a stroke when my mom was 26. I never knew her, but my mother told me that she was a quick-witted, intelligent woman, who loved reading, opera, and classical music, and was herself a decent mandolin player. I wish I had known her.
General Notes: Child - Marguerite Therese AYO
My mother, Marguerite (Ayo) Bonnet, was an accomplished artist in watercolors, oil paints, and pastels, as well as working in porcelain and ceramic. She was trained as an artist early in life and pursued that both as a vocation and as a hobby throughout her life.
She worked as a ÒRosie the Riveter,Ó helping to assemble airplanes, to aid the war effort during World War II when she and my father were stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. She followed my dad around to his various assignments, and when he retired in 1968, they returned to Lafayette, Louisiana, where she spent the rest of her life.
She loved art, music (especially opera), dogs, gardening, and reading historical fiction. She was a versatile and talented woman who enriched the lives of all who knew her.
She died in February of 2005 after a mercifully short battle with brain cancer. She will be missed.
