I believe that my grandfather was their son John but there is small question mark hanging over this. My grandfather was always known as Tom but my brother tells me that his real name was John Thomas. You see there is also a brother listed just as Thomas. Whatever one it was I believe that I am a descendant since I know for sure that my great-grandmother was a Spearpoint. If you ever come across any records to help clear this up for me I would be very grateful to hear from you.
(My grandfather Tom married Charlotte Browning and had two boys and six or seven girls, all born in Folkestone. My father was William Henry. His brother Tommy died at a young age from meningitis. The girls included Molly (Edith), Bessie, Lily, Mabel Jane, Olive and Winnie (who married a Neal and stayed in Folkestone)."There is an anomaly here between Diana Cairns and Richard Nelson
Cairns has WHM b 1845 d. 1918 with parents Richard Marshall (1793/97 - 1870) and Mary Fox (1 800-1878), m. 1824. She also lists WHM as ? born Lewes, Sussex and as aka Henry from 1881
Nelson has WHM b. 1846 d. 1918, parents Richard Marshall b. 1820 and Mary ? b. 1825

Hi Jane,Sorry that I have taken so long to reply to your query re Wm Hy Marshall, but I ha ve only recently returned from the UK.The two birth dates can be explained as follows: I ha ve Wm Hy's birth certificate which states that he was born 8 March 1845 in the town of Folk estone, Kent, son of Rd Marshall and Mary (formerly Fox). However, I have sighted his christ ening entry dated 4 Jan 1852 in the Folkestone, Kent, England parish registers and in the margin the vica r has written born March 7 1846 - which is obviously incorrect and a mistake. He was abou t 7 years old at the time of his christening and was baptized immediaitely before another me mber of the Marshall family - Edward, son of Edward and Susannah. Perhaps having the baby Ed ward baptized made Rd and My realize that they hadn't done their own son and sometimes th e vicar encouraged them to do this. I have found whole families of siblings getting baptize d on the same day - probably as a result of encouragement from a zealous vicar!The two dif ferent birth[places are because the birth cert states Folkestone, Kent, England and yet the 1891 census ent ry for Wm Hy aged 47, fisherman states that he was born in Lewes, Sussex. Perhaps he reall y was born in Lewes and then registered later at Folkestone, Kent, England. I don't suppose we shall eve r know - but I am sure that it is one and the same man.Let me know what you think.
