Death Notes: Husband - Robert A POLLEY

When did he die? Last sighting was in the 1891 census aged 90. The last time his name appears on the property records is on 30 April 1880 (registered 4 May 1880)

1) We checked our CemSearch database in the hope that it might contain other information on the burials at Bur cemetery but it has only the same information that you have about Mary Ann POLLEY's burial.

Our suggestion here would be to check with the cemetery secretary to see if Robert is actually buried there and just was left off the stone for some reason.

We found him still alive on the 1891 census transcript for Haldimand (widower-farmer/age 90/b. Ireland). living with his daughter Mary age 52. Unfortunately, the transcript only offers limited information and to get the full details you'll have to look at the microfilm which you can have brought in from Ottawa to any public library by Inter-Library Loan. Alternatively, you can check with the Public Libraries in Northumberland to see if they carry copies of it.

3) This leads me to my next suggestion. If you can get the full address off the 1891 census you can then check the land records for the sale of the farm after his death. He doesn't show up in the 1901 census and that makes sense since he would be 100 if he did so he must have died between 1891 and 1901. The land records for the Castleton area are held at the Cobourg Public Library.

Research Notes: Husband - Robert A POLLEY

I checked our marriage and death notice indexes, but couldn't find anything else. I also checked our city directories, but they didn't include Lansingburgh (north Troy) until 1860. In 1834 there was a John Hackett who was a farmer and a Thomas Hackett who was a brushmaker, and in 1836 there was a Thomas Polly who was a laborer, but there's no indication that they were related. They were all living in Troy. Robert and Mary Ann themselves were not in the city directory.

Exact birth date calculated backward from age at death

Death Certificate gives place of birth as "Ireland"
Obit gives place of birth as "County of Monaghan, Ireland"
Ireland as birth place on William Harrison SR's death certificate

Death Notes: Wife - Mary Ann HACKETT

Feveral Debility & Old Age, Aged 76 years, 5 Months, 15 Days, Informant W.H. Polley (Son) of Trenton

Obit lists date of death as 8th May 1887, also her stone lists the same date. Registration date on death certificate is May (looks like 8th) 1887 as well. The death certificate clearly reads April 7th 1887. The death may not have been registered right away, the next certificate over there is a 4 month difference between the date of death and registration. However two certificates over you have someone who died on Oct 10th 1886 and was registered on July 6 1886, 3 months BEFORE they died.

So due to the inconsistencies on the death certificates I'll go with the May date for her death.

Obituary

Died in the Township of Haldimand on the 8th of May 1887, Mrs. Mary Ann Polley, wife of Robert Polley, Sen., in her 77th year.

Mrs. Polley whose maiden name was Mary Ann Hackett was born in the County of Monaghan, Ireland, in the year 1810 and was married to her surviving husband in Feb. 1833, at Lancingburg, State of New York. Three year after which they moved to Brantford, Ontario, where they resided until the year 1846, and from thence to the Township of Haldimand.

Mrs. P. was a member of the Episcopalian church for over 40 years. She is worthy of a more extended notice than time, space, and circumstances will admit of in a secular paper, but let it suffice for the present, that she possessed a kind, generous, agreeable and cheerful disposition. She had buoyancy of soul, not given to fret or lament over misfortunes or losses that might occur, but rather disposed to enjoy the good possessed, and seek for the greater good available. Many in her large circle of intimate acquaintances will miss her kind benefactions. Mrs. P. had been in feeble health for several years before her decease owing to disease of the heart (atrophy) but she "pursued the even tenor of her way," and came down to the close of life "in full assurance of hope" the she would inherit the "rest that remaineth for the people of God".

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Sexsmith in the Methodist church, Castleton. He delivered an excellent sermon from the text chosen by the deceased, Psalms, 48th chapter, 9th, 10th and 11th verses to a large, sympathizing congregation.

O ! may I triumph so;
That when my warfare's past
Dying I may find my latest foe,
Beneath my feet at last.

Com.

Notes: Marriage

"- Married - In this town, Mr Robert POLLY to Miss Mary Ann HACKET, both of Lansingburgh." - Lansingburgh Gazett March 19th 1833

Trinity Episcopal Church is the Episcopal church in the area at the time and would be the most likely place for their marriage. However it burned down in 1868 and others have indicated that all the records were lost at that time.

Death record also states she was born in Haldimand Township however it is shown by her Christening record she was born around Brantford but would have moved to the Haldimand Township area at a young age.

1878 Atlas says he settled there in 1840 which would be either the year of his birth or a year after which would conflict with his younger brother being born in Brantford so it may well be inaccurate.

1864 Robert and James Polley: Concession 7. Lot 1, 200 acres. Value recorded as 1600. * 1865 is the first year that father and all sons are listed as property owners.

1869 James Polley: Concession 7. Lot 1, 50 acres. Value of each parcel recorded at 400

Robert Jr. was married three times and lived in Michigan City USA for some time -(Pam & Paul Money)

IGI reports a marriage for a Robert Polley born abt Jul 1947 Canada to a Rosa Alice Ruble on Sep 1882 in Howard City, Montcalm, Michigan.

There is also another Robert Polley marriage on 12 Jun 1887 in Chicago, IL to a Mary Ann MAGEE but no specifics on Robert so could have been someone else.

-Cobourg - Arrest for Forgery - On Christmas eve, Constable W. Orr went to Cramahe, about a mile and a half below Castleton, and arrested, Robert H Polley, who was charged with forging the name to his father, to a note about six years ago. After the forgery, Polley cleared out to the United States, where it is supposed he remained till about a month ago; when on his return the arrest was made, as stated. Constable Orr brought his prisoner to Cobourg, when his father satisfied the claimants of the amount in question with a new note, and nobody appearing against Polley, he was released.

Peterborough Examiner - January 15th, 1880
Same article with same details found in the Cobourg World, January 9, 1880 page 3 col.2

**Notes on article - Robert's wife passed away only weeks after his reported return in the article, he may have brought her back from the US for her last days (to see her family) or she may stayed behind when he left and he was coming to visit her. Either way the timing in relation to her death does point to some meaning for his return. His son Arthur is said to be born in Ontario on the 1881 census but I have been unable to find his birth, maybe he was born in the US?

Robert Polley Jr. purchased 40 acres, S part of the N 1/2 L2 C7 Haldimand from Jonathan Russ, the surveyor, in October 1866.

1869 Robert Polley: Concession 7. Lot 1, 50 acres. Value of each parcel recorded at 500.

There is a Rebecca Hopkins who died 20 Jul 1875 in the right location who is the right age for a match for her. Since JW remarried this is a likely death.
