General Notes: Child - Marie Madeleine LEBLANC
The following is a note from Stephen A. White regarding the correct placement of Marie-Madeleine LeBlanc, establishing her parents as Pierre and Marguerite (Gauterot) LeBlanc:
She was not a daughter of Joseph LeBlanc and Marie-Madeleine Lalande. We can be sure of that because she is not mentioned in Joseph and Marie-Madeleine's son Joseph's deposition at Belle-Ile-en-Mer in 1767. A couple of Joseph and Marie-Madeleine's daughters were at Morlaix during the same period that Marin Trahan and his wife Marie-Madeleine LeBlanc were there, and Marin and Marie-Madeleine asked one of these and the husband of the other to serve as the godparents of their son Joseph-Olivier in 1765. This shows that Marie-Madeleine was indeed related to Joseph LeBlanc and Marie-Madeleine Lalande, but rather than being their daughter she was their niece.
This identification is reinforced by the fact that Marie-Madeleine chose another of her first cousins, Anastasie LeBlanc, a daughter of her uncle and aunt Sylvain LeBlanc and Anne LePrince, to be the godmother of her daughter Franoise-Barbe in 1774. (Anastasie became a nun and was
guillotined in 1794, along with her mother, for having helped hide a Catholic priest. I am sure you must know this story.) We can be sure that Marie-Madeleine did not belong to Sylvain's family either, because the records show that she was born about five years before Sylvain and Anne were
married. So where does Marie-Madeleine fit? If you look at the family of Joseph and Sylvain LeBlanc's parents (DGFA p 1002-1003), the answer should be fairly obvious. Her father was the brother born between Joseph and Sylvain, Pierre, who married Marguerite Gauterot in 1737.
Pierre LeBlanc and Marguerite Gauterot's daughter Marie-Madeleine was born at Grand-Pre on Sept. 8, 1738. She was thus twenty years old when, on the point of being expelled from Ile St-Jean, she married Marin Trahan. She and her new husband, along with her parents and siblings, were all transported to Europe on the Neptune, arriving at Boulogne-sur-Mer late in December
1758. While they were at Boulogne, Marie-Madeleine's uncle Alexis Gauterot was married there. The record of Alexis's marriage (Rg St-Nicolas de Boulogne-sur-Mer Jan. 14, 1761) mentions Marin Trahan as one of the witnesses and describes him as the groom's nephew. Because Alexis had no sister who had married a Trahan, we can be sure that this means that Marin was Alexis's nephew by marriage. And it so happens that only one of Alexis's sisters had been married long enough by 1761 to have had a daughter who could have herself married by then, and this was his sister Marguerite, who had married Pierre LeBlanc. So, the Marie-Madeleine LeBlanc who married
Marin Trahan was definitely the daughter of Pierre LeBlanc and Marguerite Gauterot.
