what is empty nest

is it time for parents to rest?

to rely on hard work done

of bringing up daughter and son?

do not look at the empty rooms and weep

do not dwell on this before you sleep

be proud of the roots you’ve given

to adulthood they’ve been striven

they haven’t really gone that far

only a quick trip by car

in all your hearts you are quite near

to talk on the phone or to wipe a tear

so...don’t look at the empty rooms in dismay

this is a lull before a busier day

when grandchildren run about

making you want to scream and shout

when are you leaving? when do I rest?

I really treasure quiet times the best!
